During her Apprenticeship with the Northwest Laborers Union, Christina was often the only woman and one of the youngest workers on jobs. Even so, she found her passion for concrete work and gained experience in many specialties including hazmat, demolition, and refinery turnaround which earned her job security in a weak economy. After six years in the field, Christina became an Apprenticeship Coordinator at MI, where she’s now an expert on Registered Apprenticeship laws and centers her work on retention and diversity initiatives with rural and indigenous communities. “I always speak from the specific perspective of being this Apprentice,” Christina says, “I focus on making sure that apprentices learn the skills to actually build trustworthy relationships and real security at the workplace.” Another pioneering woman in trades is Martha Hale, MI Fabrication Welding Instructor for Apprentices at Bradken, where she is a Training and Development Manager. After graduating from Bates Technical College and working in fabrication shops for two years, Martha noticed there was a gap in training that kept her field from being a career, not just a job. Following lay offs from her shipyard job, Martha’s instructor from Bates Technical College contacted her and connected her with Bradken. In her new position, Martha built a welding Apprenticeship program that would close the gap she experienced between welding as a job and welding as a career. Now with thirteen years of welding and fabrication and four years of teaching under her belt, Martha is passing on her expertise to the next generation of welders. “It’s very gratifying to find students who want this life changing opportunity. I want to make sure that Apprentices can make a good living and that they can change their lives with it; confidence is key!” Find out more about our programs here: https://lnkd.in/g36ift8t #welding #naw2024

For day 3 of #naw2024, we're highlighting how MI expands Registered Apprenticeship to Underserved Populations. We believe anyone and everyone deserves a fulfilling, lasting, life sustaining career. We decrease the barriers to entry for historically disenfranchised communities, which starts with learning about their needs and meeting them where they're at. Through partnerships with community based organizations and by making our trainings mobile through our training trailers, we're reaching more and more populations who need and want the resources to begin their paths to journey level work in aerospace, manufacturing and more. It's day 1 of #NAW2024: happy Youth and Young Adult Apprenticeship Day! The years spent in K12 education are some of the most formative times of students' lives. That's why it's so important to introduce quality, hands-on, engaging career paths to learners as young adults. Our Pre-Apprenticeship model was designed with learners' needs in mind, creating a clear entry point for them to build towards fulfilling careers in #registeredapprenticeship. Find out more about upcoming Pre-Apprenticeship courses here: https://lnkd.in/eKTFCRdA Pictured: students from this year's Pre-Apprenticeship programs at MI Spokane.

Last week, our Lead Instructor in Spokane, Allen, kicked off a training for Spokane Transit. Allen taught six of Spokane Transit's mechanics machining practices for cylinder heads on their motors along with how to setup and run the machine. Next week is National Apprenticeship Week! Stay tuned to see what other exciting things we've been working on this year ?? Introducing our newest team members, Bernie, Rusty and Shannon! 1 - Bernard initially came to MI as a Boeing Mentor before advancing into his current role, and was a Quality Assurance Investigator at the Boeing company for a decade. He began his career in aerospace at Parks College of St. Louis University and is a veteran of the U.S. Army. When he is not hard at work, Bernard enjoys spending his time on carpentry and cycling. 2- Rusty Oliver is the founder and director of Hazard Factory, a Seattle industrial arts studio offering welding and related subjects and local art events. Rusty experiments, fabricates and collaborates with local authors, engineers and scientists. He currently works with plasma, high voltage and prototyping welding projects with a modified co2 laser. He has taught tens of thousands welding, foundry-work, blacksmithing, bike building, and fabrication. 3 - David Reeves has been machining since he was an 18 year old in trade school. A teacher since 2000, David was an introductory machining instructor at MI in 2023 before accepting a full time position this year. David has worked on electrical connector servicing parts, R&D prototype tools, electro-mechanical devices and industrial equipment. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Clark College, earned his BS in Physics at Portland State University and was an Electro-Optics graduate research assistant at The University of Dayton, where he also made parts for his research in stereolithography 3D printing. 4 - As the Senior Director of Education at the Machinists Institute, Shannon McGivney designs and implements high-impact training programs. A committed professional in education and workforce development, Shannon began his career as a skilled worker and has since worked for state agencies, workforce boards, and Tribal Employment Rights Offices for Sovereign Nations. Through his role at MI, Shannon continues bridging gaps and expanding access to family-wage jobs. #tradeschools #newhire #machine
