Congratulations to Nike Gates and the Head Safe Football team for actively raising awareness about the implications of football (soccer). Efforts like these are essential, and we encourage more initiatives like this around the world to promote safety and understanding in the sport.
This morning on BBC Breakfast, our Trustee, Nick Gates, spoke about the growing risks of CTE and brain injury in football, and why Head Safe Football was created in memory of his dad, former professional player, Bill Gates. Nick spoke of how we’re seeing more and more families, both from the professional game and non-league game, suffering with CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a degenerative brain condition caused by repetitive head impacts in football. "We love football – and we’re not trying to ban heading. We’re trying to find a solution to protect the next generation of players. We’re trying to reduce heading in training, because we know that 90% of heading happens in training." Huge thank you to BBC Breakfast and Jon Kay and Sally Nugent for giving Nick a platform to share this powerful message and raise awareness. Let’s protect the sport we love - and those who play it. ? ?? Let's Talk About Veterans’ Invisible Wounds: Brain Injuries and Their Impact Did you know that many veterans are suffering from invisible wounds caused by Repeated Blast Exposure (RBE)? These injuries often go unnoticed but can have devastating effects on mental health, leading to severe depression and even suicide. On @60Minutes, Scott Pelley sheds light on groundbreaking research that reveals a startling discovery: many brain injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan veterans weren’t caused by large roadside bombs but by repeated, low-level blast pressure from their own weapons. One of these heroes was Ryan Larkin, an elite Navy SEAL who served in four combat deployments. Ryan was a warrior, a "frogman" who loved his role as a SEAL. But the invisible wounds he suffered led to a struggle with severe depression, and tragically, he took his own life. These stories are heartbreaking, but they are also a call to action. We CAN make a difference. Join us at the Veteran Town Hall 2025 as we tackle this critical issue head-on: ?? Date: March 28 ? Time: 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM ?? Location: Tampa Green Beret Association Team House & Veteran Center We’ll discuss the silent epidemic of Repeated Blast Exposure and its connection to veteran suicide while exploring actionable solutions to support our heroes. ??
