We had the blessed opportunity to attend AND present at the annual ASCD conference in Washington D.C. This year’s theme was “Uniting Minds. Igniting Progress.” In our presentation, we examined the root causes for teacher burnout, teacher shortages, and declining enrollment rates of pre-service teachers with a particular emphasis on teachers of color. We explored solutions to this nationwide crisis with a call to action to center humanity and reimagine the education system. We are so thankful to share with education leaders across the country and look forward to continuing and expanding our reach as we do this important work! What’s next? A book, a workshop tour, another conference presenting opportunity, and more are on the horizon! Getting hired by STUDENTS is a true ? highlight ? of our year! We were beyond honored to partner with the Rise Up Red Wing Youth Council and facilitate a Co-Design workshop for students and staff at Red Wing High School.?(Shout out to Allegra Smisek for championing this work!) Our goal? To build the capacity for Red Wing staff and students to build power together while engaging in meaningful learning experiences and developing transferable 21st century skills. Sometimes for students, it may be intimidating to talk to adults in the “hierarchy” which we have talked about, but as this workshop progressed, the hierarchy diminished and allowed students to feel heard and in the same position as these educators. We kicked off our ? summer ? by presenting at the MN Charter School Leadership Conference in beautiful Bemidji, MN! It was great to meet so many dedicated school leaders from across the state. We invited leaders to share their brilliance and lean into curiosity around fostering engagement strategies and moving from classroom management to classroom culture. How do you define engagement? What does engagement look like, sound like, and feel like? How can you model engagement strategies as a leader to ensure your team, staff, or class feels passionate and invested in the work? What do you think is the difference between classroom management and classroom culture? We had a wonderful time facilitating a Board of Directors retreat with Girls Dream Code - a Twin Cities non-profit on a beautiful mission of empowering girls of color to pursue an interest in technology by providing free tech & computer science programs and resources.
