An amazing community facilitates an opportunity for 3 adaptive athletes to experience 12,400 ft above sea level!
关于我们
The Lockwood Foundation facilitates adaptive recreation on the mountain trails of Colorado for people with physical disabilities through the use of our adaptive trail wheelchair and by the strength our our volunteers. Our community organization believes in "Making Adventure Accessible" in a way that transcends typical service programs and creates a true inclusive community experience for wheelchair users. Our primary goal is to continually increase the quality of our service events and quantity served throughout Colorado, and show our participants that anything is possible through perseverance and community. In short, we help wheelchair users shatter limitations and create new expectations for themselves by aiding their climbing of literal and figurative mountains.

Can't find a device on the market that you need? Just build it with a few universities, right? It will be easy, right? Yes and no, ha. Only yes because these students are brilliant and hardworking .Big thanks to Joel Bach at the HCDS - Colorado School of Mines and the seniors at Colorado State University for helping us build these innovative devices! We needed a Nordic biski that could accommodate wider skis, and a single track that had suspension! Also, a shout-out that I found a fellow Guayakí Yerba Mate ambacebador, Jenna, was helping to build the biski! What a small and beautiful world! Join us in changing the world!

A beautiful day partnering with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Guayakí Yerba Mate to create accessible and inclusive opportunities to experience the trails and create memories within the community! We are so excited to build on these partnerships year after year to create more opportunities for us to share experiences and live vibrantly with equity.

Mt. Elbert in Sept 2023. Some ask why we summit Mt. Elbert when it takes 3 days and 50+ volunteers to serve 1 individual. It often comes into question if it is worth it when we could serve so many more in that timeframe with that team. Mt. Elbert is more than a single experience. It is symbolic of everything we are building together. It is emblematic of the glass ceiling we will continue to shatter as a community. We are the change, and if we can do this on Mt. Elbert year and year, and it becomes normal instead of "impossible", then every trail in every community can become adaptable through community strength. We can create something more inclusive and equitable in the mountains. For the record, we did create 110 other "impossible" trail experiences in 2023 :)
