Today (and every day) we are thankful for YOU, our amazing community that supports adult literacy and all the individuals who are working hard to reach their own unique goals. Thank you for how you help us literally change lives! ?? (This photobooth photo is from our recent 40 Years of Literacy celebration!)

Tonight is Family Reading Night! Our Family Literacy Program will be celebrating this annual statewide initiative is sponsored by the Illinois Secretary of State, Illinois State Library, and Illinois Center for the Book. Here are some ways you and your family can become great readers: ?? Read every day. ?? Read about things you like. ?? Read everything you can, like maps, comics, recipes, signs, posters, magazines, and catalogs. ?? Take a book along wherever you go. ?? Use your library often. And remember: Every night can be family reading night! This winter season of snow and cold is an especially perfect opportunity to pull out a favorite story and enjoy reading together.

It was great to have Keighty from Literacy Works stop by our office yesterday! We partner with Literacy Works to provide our main volunteer tutor training, and they also support us through many additional resources for our staff and volunteers. Thanks, Keighty and team, for all you do!

Congratulations to our amazing volunteer, Christine Awe, on her Elgin Image Award in the Volunteer Extraordinaire category! For the past twenty-four years (and counting), Chris has given over 640 hours as a volunteer tutor. She has directly and positively impacted numerous adults in Elgin, many of whom are immigrants to the area. All of her learners have made significant advances in their language learning, which is a testament to her dedication to the organization’s mission and her genuine respect and care for her learners’ needs. Chris has also served over 800 hours in other volunteer roles such as serving on the Board of Directors where her roles have included President, Vice President, Secretary, and currently, Treasurer. Her leadership has ensured the organization was sustained during lean financial times, and she has helped usher it into its fortieth year of service this year. ?????? Please join us in congratulating Chris on her award and thanking her for her amazing dedication to our organization and to literacy in our community! Chris (right) is pictured here with Paula Amenta (Elgin Community College, member of the Enhancing Elgin Community). The Elgin Image Awards were presented by Elgin Area Chamber and Elgin Development Group.

It's always great to have Gail Borden Public Library District at our Family Literacy Program to share about all the wonderful resources and services they offer. Thanks to Jessica from the Hispanic Services Division in the library for presenting for our classes recently! ??

How do you promote learning outside the classroom? Once a month, we put together take-home activity packets to share with every family in our Family Literacy Program. These are fun for families to participate in together and continue providing opportunities to practice English language learning. Here's a sneak peak of this month's packet, which includes Halloween bingo (with googly eyes ??), elements to design a sugar skull, fall word search, supplies for creating your own papel picado, and more. ?? (P.S. Did you recently donate to our fall fundraiser? Packets like this are a tangible example of how those funds support literacy! Thank you!)

We love bookmobile day! ?? Gail Borden Public Library District recently stopped by our Family Literacy Program at Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central Illinois (South Elgin location). Check out all those brand new library cards in one of our classes!
