Congratulations to inventor Maria Artunduaga, MD, MPH, MTM and her #medtech startup Samay for winning?the prestigious MedTech Innovator (MTI) Grand Prize. This physician and former VentureWell E-Team and Aspire program alumna developed a wireless patch that uses sound to detect respiratory issues before they become life-threatening emergencies. Maria’s invention journey began after losing her grandmother to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which spurred her to develop an #AI monitoring and detection device, called Sylvie after her grandmother. Special shout-out to Rushad Nanavatty and the teams at Third Derivative and RMI for bringing a conversation (and important insights!) about emissions reduction in petrochem sectors to the forefront! Joel Clement #climateaction
Post #3 on our newly launched industrial innovation cohorts! Today, a few insights from our chemicals investment thesis - specifically, olefins and aromatics (we look at ammonia separately). ?? Primary chemical production will experience significant growth (up to 46%) through 2050 - even in a net-zero scenario. (The fossil fuel industry sees the writing on the wall for oil demand, and petrochemicals are a hedge. The companies that buy the stuff - and that the world would often be better off without (fast fashion) - continue to flourish as people continue to buy trash no one needs. But I digress...) ?? Emissions are fairly evenly distributed across the value chain -- 26-41% each from feedstock (oil and gas processing), production (cracking furnaces, compressors, distillation units, etc.), and end-of-life (incinerating and landfilling plastic waste). ?? The industry is relatively consolidated (50 companies = $1.2T in sales). They don't have all the answers. But building novel chemical plants is really hard. So industry-startup partnerships will be especially critical. ?? The biggest emissions reduction potential (up to 87%) lies in a combination of non-fossil (bio-based and synthetic) feedstocks, electrified industrial heat, and process efficiency. Not the circularity stuff that VCs tend to focus on. 6 innovation areas we looked at: - Non-fossil feedstocks produced via electrochemical, thermochemical, or biochemical synthesis (INERATEC , Dioxycle, Twelve, ReSource Chemical ) - Electrified steam cracking - with some super interesting innovation in electromagnetic and shock wave heating (Coolbrook) - Membrane separation - their modularity and thermal efficiency brings advantages over distillation (Via Separations, @ardent, Imtex Membranes, SepPure Technologies) - AI/ML-led novel catalyst and enzyme discovery (Syzygy, Solugen, Mattiq, enginzyme) - Thermoplastics substitutes - mainly bio-based polymers and lignocellulosic fibers (Origin Materials, releaf? by avantium, Lygos) - Chemical/ molecular recycling - which has the advantage of returning plastics to their original monomer forms (Agilyx, PureCycle Technologies, Nexus Circular, Alterra) We've already had 46 startups apply to join the cohort - and the awesome Third Derivative companies already working on this challenge: rePurpose Global, Skyven Technologies, DiviGas, Antora Energy, Kanin Energy, AtmosZero, SeeO2 Energy Inc., Oxylus Energy, Carbonade, Wild Microbes,. Special thanks to Joel Clement, Robert Schneider and the The Lemelson Foundation foundation for supporting the initiative; to Brianne Knickel Cangelose, Anisha Krishnakumar, Ana Sophia Mifsud, Mackenzie Cool, for developing the thesis and leading the work; and to Brian Payer, Bryan Fisher, and Thomas Koch Blank for all their support.

We are pleased to announce that Joel Clement has been promoted to the new position of Director of The Lemelson Foundation’s Climate Action initiative. In this role, he will guide the Foundation’s efforts to support partners and grantees utilizing innovation and invention to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also promoting climate justice. The Foundation launched our $50M climate initiative last year to support innovative approaches to decarbonize the global economy, helping expand the pathways for reducing emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. We are happy to share that David Coronado has been promoted to the inaugural role of Director of The Lemelson Foundation’s Invention Education initiative! As Director, he will lead the Foundation’s focus on building and strengthening invention education programming in communities and schools on local and national levels — and continue advocating for access to high-quality STEM experiences for students of all backgrounds. At the Foundation, we support invention education as the best means to cultivate the inventors and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. With its focus on real-world problem solving, it inspires more students to pursue STEM careers, particularly those who have been traditionally underrepresented. But it also develops skills that are essential for all jobs in the innovation economy — like problem identification, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
