Another common service-connected disability for women Veterans is "Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)." Major Depressive Disorder (MDD, also known as "depression" and/or "clinical depression") is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities. It can significantly impair a person's ability to manage daily tasks and responsibilities. Recognizing the various forms of depression, such as persistent depressive disorder, perinatal depression, psychotic depression, and seasonal affective disorder, is crucial for effective treatment and support. It's important for individuals experiencing symptoms to seek professional help, as effective treatments are available that can improve quality of life. HOW DOES THE VA RATE MDD The VA rates MDD using the General Rating formula for Mental Disorders by evaluating the frequency, severity, and duration of a Veteran's symptoms, which can impact their occupational and social functioning. Ratings are assigned at different levels, from 0% to 100%, with increments at 10%, 30%, 50%, and 70%. The more severe the symptoms and the greater the impact on daily life, the higher the rating. It's important for veterans to provide thorough documentation of their symptoms to receive an accurate rating. PTSD is one of the most common service-connected disabilities for women Veterans. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) defines Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a mental health problem that can occur after a person experiences or witnesses a life-threatening event. Women in the military face unique challenges that can increase their risk of developing PTSD. For example, they may be exposed to combat, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination—all of which have been linked to higher rates of PTSD among female Veterans. While it's normal to have stress reactions after a traumatic event, if these reactions don't go away over time or they disrupt your life, it could be PTSD. Symptoms may include reliving the event, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, negative changes in beliefs and feelings, and feeling keyed up. The VA recognizes that anyone can develop PTSD at any age within months or years following a variety of traumatic events such as combat, assault, or disasters. Disability compensation and treatment options are available from the VA, and they encourage those suffering to seek help from the VA. HOW DOES THE VA RATE PTSD The VA rates PTSD using the General Rating formula for Mental Disorders by evaluating the frequency, severity, and duration of a Veteran's symptoms, which can impact their occupational and social functioning.
