Make Art. Build Community. Create Change.

关于我们

The Laundromat Project is an arts organization that advances artists and neighbors as change agents in their own communities. We make art and culture in community while fostering leadership among our neighbors through our celebrated Create Change artist development programs, and our creative community-building initiatives across New York City. The idea of a laundromat as a primary place for engagement has expanded over time. It now serves as a metaphor for a variety of settings in which artists and neighbors transform their lives and surroundings. This includes community gardens, public plazas, local cultural organizations, and more.

The LP team had the pleasure of visiting East Side Cultural Center's bookstore, Bandung Books, during our Peer Learning Exchange last month. “Broken Promises: Artists in Solidarity Through the Lens of James Baldwin,” edited by Aubrey Pandori and M’Kala Payton, was a top pick from The LP’s Programs Associate, Alex Huaylinos! This zine honors the legacy of James Baldwin and highlights artists whose poetry, letters, and visual art call for global solidarity across freedom movements led by oppressed peoples. Today’s selection features Oakland-based visual artist Cristina Edwards, who reflects on the complex political reality of living in Oakland. Swipe to read! Reflect and share: What political realities exist in your neighborhood? How do you use art to explore them? #ReadRestandReflect #TheLPLibrary
