???? Hot off the online press! ???? Dogs may be able to help people with PTSD by sniffing out stress biomarker smells (chemicals our bodies release when we have a physical stress reaction) in human breath!! ?? Doctoral student Laura Kiiroja and Drs. Sherry H. Stewart and Simon Gadbois of Dalhousie University conducted this groundbreaking study! ?? ??The study: ?? Breath samples ???? were collected from human volunteers during calm and stressed states induced by trauma cue exposure ?? Two scent detection ???? ??canines participated in tasks to differentiate between the calm and stress human breath samples, and “alert” to (detect) the “stress” breath samples ?? Simply put, the dogs attempted to “sniff”??and select which breath samples were “stress” breath through differences in how the stress breath and calm breath smelled!! ???? Findings: ?? Dogs demonstrated high accuracy in differentiating between calm and stress human breath samples, correctly identifying the “stress” breath samples about 90% of the time!! ?? These dogs’ abilities to sniff out “stress breath” hints at the canine ability to detect distinct endocrine stress biomarker scents released in human body physical stress reactions ?? Teaching PTSD service dogs to alert to these scents may enhance their ability to provide early warning to oncoming PTSD symptoms, making them even better at helping their people when they need it most! ??These findings may help expand opportunities for canines in need too! Groups such as K9s For Warriors, the largest PTSD service dog training organization in the United States, adopt dogs from shelters and animal rescues and teach them how to be PTSD service dogs! ?? Hot off the online press?? In a groundbreaking recent review of research spanning 27 years, findings underscored the profound *psychological* and *safety* risks associated with forced separation of people from their beloved pets during crises such as those related to domestic violence, health, income/housing, and natural disasters. ?? Key Findings: 1?? Lack of pet-inclusive support services leads to delayed seeking of safety, risking both human and animal welfare. 2?? The deep emotional bonds between humans and pets underscore the urgency for inclusive crisis planning. 3?? Recommendations emphasize the need for pet considerations in domestic violence and emergency housing services, health/mental health crisis response, and pet-inclusive evacuation plans. Congratulations to James Cook University PhD candidate Jasmine Montgomery and Associate Professors Janice Lloyd and A/Professor Zhanming Liang for a great research review article! With 66% of US households reporting having at least one companion animal, and the majority indicating their animal is a family member, it’s way past time for action! Let’s ensure our crisis support services accommodate the profound bonds between us humans and our non-human animal companions. To find resources to help keep people and animals together during crises, go to pethelpfinder.org, a free national (US) resource database operated by Open Door Veterinary Collective. Together, we can pave the way for safer and more compassionate communities for people *and* animals. ?? #HumanAnimalBond #CrisisSupport #health #publichealth #mentalhealth #socialwork #PetInclusiveServices #animalwelfare #socialwork #healthcare #mentalhealth #onehealth #onewelfare #petsarefamily #family #domesticviolence #disasterresponse #homelessness #socialdeterminants #socialdeterminantsofhealth #community #innovation
