Developing Women to Do a World of Good
关于我们
The mission of the Junior League of Portland, Maine is to advance women's leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration and training. For over 100 years, we have trained thousands of volunteers and leaders, sponsored and supported legislation that directly affects our communities, and either partnered with, founded, or supported so many of the greater Portland community organizations and programs in existence today, including the Childrens Museum and Theater of Maine, Center for Grieving Children, Kids First Center, Beacon (now Preble Street) Teen Center, and the Trauma Intervention Program. Through these and many other initiatives, the JLP has established itself as a respected and valuable community partner. The JLP welcomes all persons who identify as women and who value our mission to join us. Most of our community impact work is centered around the greater Portland area, but our members reside throughout the state of Maine. JLP's community impact projects have a two-fold purpose: they enable the JLP to directly impact our community by addressing a specific need, and they also provide our members with an opportunity to further develop the skills learned through JLP's training programs and gain new skills through on-the-job experiential learning. It's time for another Sustainer Living Histories Project feature! Join us each month as we “introduce” sustaining members of the Junior League of Portland, Maine. From members who have been a part of the Portland League throughout their Junior League careers to members who have transferred here from other leagues, we will be interviewing all sustaining members who are willing to sit down with us and share their experiences. This month, we hear from Wilma Sawyer who joined Junior League of Portland in the mid-1960s. While in the league, she learned how to volunteer, why to volunteer and where to volunteer. She is now a Sustainer Emeritus.

On Saturday November 9th, a few of our members spent the morning at the The Center for Grieving Children learning about the history of the center and how it operates, and helping to organize their storage space. The Junior League of Portland, Maine helped to get the Center up and running over 30 years ago and today we remain a strong and active supporter of their mission, which closely aligns with ours: empowering and nurturing community support. We want to thank the Center for having us and look forward to more volunteer collaborations! Junior League

Our annual Sustainer Luncheon took place on Friday, October 11th at the The Woodlands Club. We had a lovely mix of long-time members, new sustainers, Board members, as well as some of our active members. We had a great time catching up and meeting new people!

Carol Stern initially joined the Junior League around 1974. She moved to Maine and transferred to our League from the Boston league in 2021. She joined the rank of Sustainer Emeritus in 2022. While in the league, she gained confidence, was able to participate in trainings, and made long-term friends. Tune in next month for the next iteration of the Sustainer Living History Project.

The time is finally here! For our initial video, join us for the interview with mother-daughter duo Hope Bramhall and Betsy Twombly. Hope’s active start was during the 1960-1961 year and she made such an impact on the league that one of our awards is named after her: The Hope P. Bramhall Volunteer of the Year Award. Hope served as president during the 1968-1969 year. Betsy’s active start was during the 2000 – 2001 year. She joined the league after seeing the joy it brought her mom and found it a place to disconnect from her day job. For the full interview visit: https://lnkd.in/eMgdbPaf
