Pakistan's melting glaciers are destroying mountain villages, with over 48,000 people in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral at high risk from climate-induced disasters. Entire villages, like Badswat in Ghizer district, are being evacuated due to the increasing danger. Climate change has accelerated glacier melt, leading to increased risks of glacial lake outbursts and landslides. This is just part of an area referred to by some as the Third Pole; a place which has more ice than any other part of the world outside the polar regions. Prince Rahim, Chairman of AKDN's Environment and Climate Committee, addressed the second High-Level Ministerial Dialogue on Culture-Based Climate Action, co-organised by the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. This event was jointly organised by the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, who co-chair the initiative. During his intervention, Prince Rahim highlighted the work of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture’s Historic Cities Programme (AKHCP), which has been active for over three decades. “Our central objective is to improve the lives of the inhabitants around cultural assets, while promoting models that will sustain these improvements,” he said. “[AKHCP] has shown that investments in culture can help create sustainable and green development. Culture can have a lasting, positive impact in shaping people’s lives, identities, and their aspirations.” He presented the AKDN model, showcasing its measurable positive impacts beyond cultural conservation. This model promotes good governance, strengthens civil society, increases incomes and economic opportunities, fosters respect for human rights, and enhances environmental stewardship, even in the world’s poorest and most remote regions. Prince Rahim emphasised that these outcomes should be integral to the role of culture in the context of climate change. On behalf of AKDN, he endorsed the consensus on the Terms of Reference for the Group of Friends of Culture-Based Climate Action, which was presented at the meeting. Ismaili CIVIC and various interfaith partners including Georgia Interfaith Power & Light and the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta came together on the 4th annual Global Ismaili CIVIC Day and World Rivers Day. Over 200 volunteers participated in seven waterway and green space cleanups in Georgia and Tennessee. Volunteers collected over 130kg of trash, including tyres, bicycles, car parts, and 135kg of plastic, while also removing over 45 Km2 of invasive plant species! #Ismaili #IsmailiCIVIC #IsmailiCIVICSoutheast #GICD2024 #CommunityService #Volunteering #Inclusion

Ismaili CIVIC volunteers in Adilabad, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) India, hosted a tree plantation drive earlier last month. A large number of trees were planted to mitigate the effects of climate change and support the community. AKAH India works closely with various communities to build resilience to support the impact of natural hazards and climate change. Together with Ismaili CIVIC, they are creating meaningful change.

The Aga Khan Award for Architecture was created in 1977 to help revitalise the rich Muslim architectural traditions that were being lost in the modern world. Spurred on by family support and a desire to make a difference, these twins from Hunza, Pakistan are taking the taekwondo world by storm. Taekwondo is a martial art involving a great range of skills, which often go beyond the physical. The combative sport also teaches respect and resilience to push through boundaries and challenges. Manisha and Maliha Ali have embodied these qualities in their continued commitment to the sport. Since the age of 14, Manisha and Maliha have also been on a mission to break gender stereotypes, making a name for themselves in the taekwondo community. Leaders and actors of peace from around the world are gathered at the historic Palais de Chaillot this week for the 7th Paris Peace Forum. This year’s theme, “Wanted: A Functioning Global Order,” focuses on the urgent need for international cooperation in an era of heightened global rivalries, instability and North-South divides. Taking place just days after the US presidential elections and before the G20 in Rio, the discussions explore critical issues around four key themes: peace, inequality, climate and environment, and digital governance. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is honoured to be a founding partner of the Paris Peace Forum, reinforcing its enduring collaboration with the French Republic and commitment to historic shared values of peace, human development and pluralism. The Forum’s inclusive approach resonates with AKDN’s decades-long commitment to development through partnerships with governments, civil society and the private sector. Three issues at this year’s Forum align with AKDN’s global priorities: 1) crafting peace to build a safer world, 2) addressing inequalities and accelerating the SDGs, and 3) protecting people and the planet. AKDN is a Strategic Partner alongside, amongst others, the Government of France and the European Commission. Its delegation is led by Prince Amyn and Prince Rahim. Our fourth episode of Muslim Footprints is about the Egyptian historian Al Maqrizi - the most influential historian of Egypt before modern times and a major source of Fatimid history. Telling us his story is Professor Nasser Rabbat, head of the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Art and Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Al Maqrizi left a rich legacy of writings that offer a window into the social, economic, and cultural life of the medieval Islamic world. His meticulous documentation of Cairo's history was used centuries later by the Ottomans to understand the land they had inherited. It was also appropriated by Napoleon’s teams for their monumental Description de l’égypte, so his work became the go-to source for anyone studying the country.
