Wow! See article below!
Each year hundreds of children are born legally blind because of a genetic disorder that degrades their retinas. Though some can distinguish between light and dark early on, a defect in their AIPL1 gene leaves most without sight by the time they turn four. The disorder has long been considered irreversible. But that’s no longer true. A new gene therapy from publicly traded company MeiraGTx has managed to do something unprecedented: It’s given eyesight to 11 children who were born blind. We are fortunate to have our Human Resources Director, Kristen, help keep our staff and clients safe and healthy. "When I joined in November 2020, the Iris Network was in desperate need of N95 masks. Back then there were none available to the public to use, the supplies were going directly to the hospitals, assisted living facilities etc. While we have an assisted living facility, we did not have this obscure program set in place. New to The Iris Network and the industry, I dove in. With the help of Lisa, the Administrator at The Iris Park Apartments and the Maine’s FEMA program, I was able to put together a Respiratory Protection Program that met OSHA standards, received a training and certificate on Fit Testing, and was able to get us the personal protective equipment (PPE) we needed for our Residential Care Workers, Maintenance Team, and Community Rehabilitation Staff to provide independent living and vision rehabilitation services throughout the state. With all of these protocols in place, The Iris Park Apartments and The Iris Network made it through the pandemic without an outbreak!" Kristen performs annual fit testing of both paper N95 masks and the ENVO masks for direct service staff. Thanks for all the hats you wear and all you do for the agency, Kristen!
