Spotlight: CALIFORNIA STATE TEACHERS RETIREMENT SYSTEM(CalSTRS) At our upcoming Symposium on April 8th in a session entitled,?“Leveraging Scale for System-level Progressâ€,?we will explore CalSTRS's field leading journey in system-level investing. Speakers will discuss key initiatives, including the Sustainable Investment & Stewardship Strategies Program, the Low-Carbon Transition Workplan, and active corporate engagement efforts.? The session will highlight how CalSTRS leverages its scale and influence to drive system-level change, align investments with long-term sustainability, and advocate for stronger market transparency and governance. ?? Keynote: David Erickson, Federal Reserve Bank of New York During this opening keynote,?David Erickson, Senior Vice President and Head of Outreach and Education, Federal Reserve?Bank of New York?will provide an overview of the Making Missing Markets Initiative, and how system-level investing is pivotal to making a missing market that involves working within existing ecosystems and/or creating new ones to accomplish the following: connect new sources of capital to community needs; scale existing sources of capital to meet a community need; and/or connect previously unlinked buyers and sellers so that they can work together to finance solutions that create value and wealth, all in the service of creating an economy that works for all. ?? Expert View: Fiduciary Duty with Tiffany R. Reeves, Faegre Drinker Much of the world’s investment capital is managed by fiduciaries—individuals responsible for making investment decisions on behalf of others while focusing on the best interests of the beneficiaries. These fiduciaries must adhere to strict ethical and legal standards, limiting their ability to invest based solely on personal preferences. The same principles apply to system-level investing. In this session,?Tiffany Reeves, Partner at Faegre Drinker, will explore the fiduciary duties that govern system-level investors and their decision-making responsibilities. ? S5:E2 of Columbia | SIPA's graduate course on?#SystemLevelInvesting?is in the books! For this session, Jon Lukomnik, our TA Tarunya Reddy, and I drew extensively from Jon’s book with James Hawley,?"Moving Beyond Modern Portfolio Theory: Investing That Matters."?Alongside?"21st Century Investing: Redirecting Financial Strategies to Drive Systems Change,"?which I co-authored with Steve Lydenberg, these books form the foundation of our course. Together, they explore the why, what, and how of system-level investing. From the syllabus: Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) has fundamentally shaped how money is managed today—powering everything from mutual funds and ETFs to index funds. It’s embedded in regulation, taught as the dominant investment framework, and widely adopted across the industry. However, MPT has?critical blind spots?that demand attention. While MPT focuses on portfolio construction and relative returns (e.g., “Did you beat the benchmark?â€),?system-level investing?shifts the focus to absolute returns, recognizing that the health of capital markets as a whole outweighs any single investor’s ability to mitigate risk through security selection alone. This approach inherently leads investors toward sustainability, as long-term financial success depends on thriving environmental, social, and economic systems. Ironically, MPT’s widespread success has reinforced the very need for system-level thinking by increasing universal ownership and diversified portfolios. This week, we were joined by?Adam Connaker, Director of Impact Investing at the?Surdna Foundation, who shared how Surdna is one of the early leaders in this shift in investment strategy. Aligning its century-long mission with policies that address systemic environmental and social challenges, Adam detailed how Surdna—via core programs on Inclusive Economies, Sustainable Environments, and Thriving Cultures—integrates impact-driven policies with financial prudence, breaks down systemic barriers, and builds strategic partnerships for a more equitable and sustainable future. ???Want to learn more about system-level investing? Season 5 of Columbia | SIPA's Graduate Course on #SystemLevelInvesting is officially underway! Jon Lukomnik and I spent the "off-season" revamping the curriculum, integrating the latest thinking, adding new case studies, and—admittedly—trying not to panic about the course being oversubscribed. In addition,?Tarunya Reddy?is joining as the Teaching Assistant for this season, continuing the tradition of former students returning to coach and guide the next cohort. [Editor’s Note: Yes, I’ve somehow turned to using sports metaphors. If you know me, you’ll understand this is surprising—most of the time, when someone (particularly my American football-obsessed mom) mentions “the big game,†my response is, “Tell me more about this sports ball you’re referring to.â€] About the Course: System-level investing explores the interplay between investments, the real economy, and the complex challenges facing our environmental, social, and financial systems. This course equips students with: ?? The finance theory underpinning system-level investing ??Tools to manage system-level rewards and risks ??Strategies to integrate this approach into modern investing practices Throughout the semester we’ll also spotlight notable investors leading the charge in this space, many of whom will join us as guest speakers. This season’s lineup includes Adam Connaker?(Director of Impact Investing, Surdna Foundation), Rodney Foxworth?(CEO & Co-Founder, Worthmore), Cambria Allen Ratzlaff?(Chief Responsible Investment Ecosystems Officer, UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment), Beth Young?(Consultant, CGSS-Corporate Governance and Sustainable Strategies LLC), with more to be announced! For professionals interested in system-level investing, here are some additional opportunities: ? The Federal Reserve Bank of New York's Making Missing Markets Initiative.
