It’s a beautiful day to highlight a recent initiative that we, along with Tyler Wilson from Strategies 360, were thrilled to lead: The Worker Voice Project. This initiative was launched to explore critical issues affecting millions of individuals across the United States: persistent problems of unemployment, underemployment, and poor job quality, particularly in marginalized communities. And where the workforce development system fits in to address these issues and meet the opportunities of tomorrow. We started from the basic principle of asking workers’ opinions of their jobs and what they want for the future, while also asking workforce and labor system stakeholders what is working and what they want to see from workforce development systems and our economy. Through in-depth research, including interviews with over 150 key stakeholders and national surveys of over 1,200 workers, we found that while there has been some progress, the workforce development system has room to grow to address the opportunities and challenges of today, meet workers where they are at, and advance economic justice. We were truly honored to be part of the National Fair Chance Hiring Conference, where Melissa had the opportunity to? facilitate conversations on the critical issues surrounding employment for justice-impacted individuals. This event brought together business owners, policymakers, researchers, and those directly impacted by the criminal legal system to explore the powerful shifts happening in fair chance hiring. Over two days, participants such a Willette Benford, Larry Miller, President of the Nike’s Air Jordan brand, and Ken O., engaged in dynamic discussions about the evolving policies, the impact on those seeking second chances, and how we can build a more inclusive workforce. By involving scholars, justice-impacted leaders, and practitioners, the conference took a deep dive into what real progress looks like. The Intersect is proud to announce that we will be coordinating and facilitating the community of practice for the next two years in an initiative aimed at addressing homelessness and advancing economic justice across Illinois. We are elated to be working as a united front with the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), the Illinois Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), the Illinois Interagency Task Force on Homelessness, through the Illinois Job Training and Economic Development Program (JTED). As part of this initiative, we are committed to empowering partners across the state to forge stronger systems collaborations for people experiencing homelessness to access employment and income that sustains their housing. Together, we’re advancing shared housing and economic justice goals for communities across the state. Case study spotlight! At The Intersect, we’re committed to driving meaningful change. Civic Works, a non-profit organization, reached out to us for guidance and solutions to enhance job quality strategies for Baltimoreans with low incomes and those in low-quality jobs. We began with an in-depth discovery process, working closely with Civic Works' staff and participants. Our approach involved: ?? 30+ interviews with stakeholders across Baltimore and nationally. ?? Analyzing reports and research to understand job quality efforts. ?? Co-developing strategic frameworks and facilitating key decision-making sessions. With these insights, we co-developed strategic frameworks and facilitated design sessions that paved the way for Civic Works to make key strategic decisions. The result? A comprehensive, multi-pronged strategic blueprint that Civic Works and other stakeholders can use to continue advancing job quality in the region. From interim findings to final strategy development, we were there every step of the way, co-creating solutions that will help Civic Works thrive in its mission.
