Wonderful dive on Friday monitoring the ORAI City of Hollywood offshore reef site. Joined by a team of University of Florida researchers deploying ROVs to map our structures and create a monitoring baseline. Looking forward to sharing the data! Happy to report a beautiful reef with so much of marine life! Photos coming soon! Big thank you to The International SeaKeepers Society for getting us out on the water making this mission possible! Also to the best captains Rick Thomas and Captain Till! #bluetech #marineconservation #artificialreefs

Surface Interval Diving, in support of The International SeaKeepers Society went out on the ocean last Friday 7th March to support Dr. Shelby Thomas (PhD) and her “ORAI” (Ocean Rescue Alliance) organization. We took both of the Seakeepers’ Discovery vessels off Hollywood Beach, Florida to survey a recently deployed artificial reef site, which was placed in early 2023. These sites are creating foundational structure to support new Coral growth, and provide nurseries for the local Marine life. Supporting Dr. Thomas‘s efforts were a team of researchers from the University of Florida, who brought their LIDAR survey equipment to map this artificial reef site. With the expansion project of Port Everglades in process, well over 2 million individual corals will have to be transplanted outside of Port Everglades as part of the restoration aspect of the port expansion. This is just one of many organizations that are coming together to cultivate And promote healthy biodiversity, and Coral restoration here in South Florida. I can’t overstate the importance of this type of work. Much more collaboration is going to be necessary in the future.

  • Mediterranean white sharks are among the most endangered in the world—but they’re still out there. These apex predators once roamed the region in greater numbers, but sightings are now rare, and their movements remain a mystery. Scientists know they exist from historical records and recent DNA traces in the water, but without known aggregation sites, locating them is like searching for a needle in a haystack. That’s where you come in. Through our Citizen Science eDNA project, boaters can play a direct role in uncovering the secrets of these elusive sharks. By collecting water samples during your trips, you can help researchers detect white shark DNA, identify potential hotspots, and fill critical knowledge gaps in their conservation. If you’re a boater in the Mediterranean and want to be part of this groundbreaking effort, DM us or visit https://lnkd.in/dY4VS66P to learn more and get involved.

  • The California State University, Long Beach Shark Lab has been at the forefront of white shark research in California, studying their behavior, tracking their movements, and educating the public on shark safety. Their latest PSA highlights the importance of safe boating in shark nursery areas—reducing risks for both people and marine life. If you're boating in the California coast watch the PSA below! https://lnkd.in/e6fhRHbJ As longtime collaborators with Dr. Chris Lowe and the CSU Shark Lab, SeaKeepers recognizes the importance of continued research in shark conservation and public safety. However, without additional funding, the California Shark Beach Safety Program is at risk of shutting down by 2025. Help keep this program alive by donating here: https://lnkd.in/eRPcbicE Want to do more? Boaters can play a direct role in marine research and conservation by joining the SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Program. By offering time on your vessel, you can support scientists in conducting vital research, including studies like this one. • The International SeaKeepers Society is proud to welcome DISCOVERY Yachts Morning Song, Magic Happens, Akula, HammerCatch, and Happy into our mission to map the world’s ocean floor. As part of the Seabed 2030 Project, these vessels are contributing critical bathymetric data that brings us closer to fully understanding the shape of our oceans. With only 25% of the seafloor mapped, every journey these vessels take adds valuable insights into ocean currents, climate change indicators, and marine resources. By equipping private vessels with simple data loggers, SeaKeepers and its partners are harnessing the power of the global yachting community to advance marine science. We’re grateful to these vessel owners and operators for joining the effort to create a comprehensive map of the ocean floor. Together, we are shaping the future of ocean exploration.
