For this #FreighterFriday, we thought we’d share a new training space at Interlake’s corporate office. Located in our reconfigured loft area at our headquarters, the new space offers a dedicated learning environment to promote various kinds of training. "The long-term vision is to hold a variety of other training there to help build the knowledge, skills, and abilities of our sailors," says Joe Del Priore, Interlake’s Manager of Health and Safety. Safety Joe, as he is nicknamed, had the vision and did the lion’s share of the work to create the new training space. "By assessing our training needs, we have an area that can host internal or third-party instructors to ensure our fleet is prepared for the challenges they face." Tables and chairs can be easily moved to customize the educational experience. An unused television was repurposed to allow for multimedia use. The location also provides for a blended learning experience: trainees can participate in general lectures before easily transitioning into the warehouse to perform hands-on training. The most routine function is hosting new hires for orientation classes. Spare equipment and signs were used to make it feel more ship-like and to help new sailors become more familiar with the shipboard environment. With a little more work, the floor will resemble the bow of a ship with helpful stenciled words like, “port” and “starboard”. #safetyfirst #fullsteamahead #training #mariners #vision #hardwork #Orientation #setupforsuccess #neverstoplearning

I couldn’t be more proud of our incredible team and our industry and education partners! ??????

It's not only where we execute our business of moving the building blocks of America, and keeping commerce flowing in our Great Lakes region, but it's where we live, play and raise our families. Interlake is proud to have Katie Wells, our manager of Environmental Stewardship & Quality, serving on Cuyahoga River AOC, which brings together stakeholders from community groups, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations working for clean water, watershed stewardship, and restoration. The committee’s collaboration with the Ohio Lake Erie Commission, the USEPA’s Great Lakes National Program Office, and Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District are crucial to the continued restoration of the Cuyahoga River and ultimate goal of delisting (i.e., getting off of the naughty list).
