On November 19, 2023, at 12:21 a.m., a metal tube ruptured within a fired heater during the initial startup of a renewable diesel hydroprocessing unit at the Marathon Martinez Renewables (“Marathon Martinez”) facility in Martinez, California.a The ruptured tube released renewable diesel and hydrogen, resulting in a fire that seriously injured one Marathon Martinez employee. Response Technologies Corporation is hosting a four-week online program that provides the Hazardous Materials Technician with the knowledge and skills to effectively serve as a Hazardous Materials Safety Officer. The program uses a series of presentations and scenarios involving facility and transportation-based incidents. The participants are provided with opportunities to apply their existing knowledge to their role as the HazMat Safety Officer during the analysis, planning, implementation, evaluation, and termination phases of the incident. It's application time at the National Fire Academy While the doors may be closed for now, the NFA is seeking applicants for the summer academic quarter. While I don't know what they future will hold, if the NFA opens back up, having full classes will demonstrate that there is national interest and value in the NFA. Classes being offered in the hazardous materials curricula are appropriate for hazardous materials technicians, inspectors and code enforcement officials, EMS and advanced health care providers, special operations program leaders, and incident commanders of all types. The classes being offered in the summer quarter include: chemical hazard analysis for risk-based response (https://lnkd.in/gRXs3G9Q), hazardous materials officer and hazardous materials safety officer (https://lnkd.in/d6sCesEa), advanced life support to hazardous materials incidents (https://lnkd.in/gEKvNxdr), hazardous materials code enforcement (https://lnkd.in/gWu5Qvsr) and special operations program management and leadership (https://lnkd.in/dwf7FqiQ). Modern radiological warfare is considered to have started with the dropping of the first atomic bomb in WW2.?Today’s threat is mostly focused on smaller radiological devices often called dirty bombs. Since 1993, the IAEA Incident and Tracking Database (ITDB) has recorded 4075 cases involving nuclear materials, radioisotopes, and radioactively contaminated materials. More than half involved the theft of radiological materials while 344 were linked to trafficking or malicious use. Of the 146 events recorded in 2023, only 5 were attributed to nefarious purposes. The number of events recorded annually over the past few years is relatively static; however, the proportion of attempted scams involving materials claimed to be nuclear or radioactive has increased.?
