It's Fellows Friday! Please join us in extending a very warm ITP welcome to John Francis Nolan! With over 50 years in telecoms, John has had an incredible career spanning BT, local government, and financial services (NatWest Group) before moving into consultancy. Since 1995, he has worked with major telcos and start-ups across Europe, the USA, and the Middle & Far East as part of Intercai Mondiale. John holds a degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from London South Bank University and is proud to have the City & Guilds Full Technological Certificate in Telecommunications (Regulation 271). A Chartered Engineer, he is also a Life Senior Member of the IEEE, and a member of the IET & ACM. We asked John what becoming a Fellow meant to him and this is what he had to say :- “I can still recall my induction day on 2 August 1971 as a Trainee Technician Apprentice (TTA) into what was then Post Office Telecommunications (POT), LTR, London City Area.?The event was held in the London Bridge House and there must have been at least 60 TTAs in the room.? I still have friends from that day.? Although, I didn’t realise it at the time, my decision to join POT was due to an interest in telecommunications at secondary school and the mother of my first girlfriend suggested I should do so.? Within that induction week, I joined the predecessor to the ITP (IPOEE), in which I found a minefield of technical information via their journal – In my honest opinion, The ITP Journal is a worthy successor. Wind on circa 54 years, and here I am, still in the telecoms business with technology advances keeping my brain working.?Not surprisingly, I have made many mistakes in my career (none sackable, I hasten to add), all of which I have used to consider potential solutions to new challenges. My elevation to ITP Fellowship is the pinnacle of my career and am making an offer to help those who are in a relatively early stage of their career an “old head.”? Most problems can be solved by communicating at an early stage which, after all, is what telecoms is all about.” Congratulations John, we're delighted to welcome you to the ITP Fellowship Community! I absolutely loved moderating the Next Generation Apprenticeship panel at Channel Live today! Apprentices have so much insight to offer, and it’s so important that we listen to their experiences, learn from them, and take that knowledge back into our own organisations. That’s how we create real opportunities - not just for new apprentices but for existing employees too. I was lucky to share the stage with an incredible group of people: Thomas Baldwin started his ITP apprenticeship with Vorboss in 2019 as one of our very first Vorboss hires! Victoria Hale joined the ITP apprenticeship programme with Boldyn Networks in 2022. Tom Smith MITP is upskilling through a leadership apprenticeship through the ITP with HG Comms Ltd (A Grupo Cobra company). Daisy Biggs began her apprenticeship with the ITP and Grapevine | IT & Comms just three months ago - yes… just 3 months ago! And now she’s on a panel! Tom Culley BEM has spent years advocating for apprentices within BT Group, encouraging them to join the ITP. When he submitted his dissertation for his apprenticeship degree, he also submitted it for publication in the ITP Journal - it was published, and now he sits on our Editorial Board, helping shape research publications worldwide. This group is inspiring. They’re intelligent, driven, and passionate about their work. And we need to be listening to them more. Huge thanks to my panel - what an amazing conversation!

It’s Fellows Friday! Please join us in welcoming Stuart Lyle CEng CITP FBCS FITP MCIIS to The ITP Fellows Community! Stuart is a Distinguished Engineer & Senior Manager for Security Liaison and Industry Collaboration at BT Group, working to enhance the security and resilience of telecom networks nationally and internationally. He collaborates with UK organizations like NCSC, Ofcom, and Government, as well as global standards bodies such as ETSI, 3GPP, and the GSMA. He is also BT’s principal authority on the Telecommunications (Security) Act, guiding compliance and industry-wide support. With a career spanning Vodafone, Three, O2, and TalkTalk, Stuart has played key roles in fraud detection, security consulting, IT audit, business continuity, and cybersecurity leadership. At TalkTalk, he helped rebuild security post-data breach, with his awareness program winning ‘Cyber Awareness Plan of the Year’ in 2018. Since joining BT in 2019, Stuart has taken on leadership roles in the GSMA Security Accreditation Scheme, NSIE, and various industry forums. He holds a BEng in Mathematical Engineering, multiple security certifications (CISA, CRISC, CDPSE, SABSA), and is a Fellow of the BCS, Chartered Engineer, and Chartered IT Professional. Beyond telecoms, Stuart is Board Secretary & Trustee at the Breck Foundation, promoting online safety for children, and supports Be The Business.
