  • Over the last 30 or so years I have worked in many roles and consulted to a wide range of organisations in the business and management of sport. During this time, I have witnessed significant development and change across global sport organisations, professional franchises, grassroots clubs and associations and local government authorities. Whatever the role, I required every skill that life, sport and education had developed within me. But! There is one skill set I wish I’d found earlier in my journey… project management! Once discovered, I realised that everything I had undertaken was a project or series of projects. More importantly, the application of practical, easily learned project management principles would have improved almost every outcome! I have since applied this knowledge and found that sport is a particularly dynamic field for the use of simple project management principles and practices. For example: Event Management - Sport organisations regularly host tournaments, competitions, and events that require expert project management skills, from local matches to international championships. Facility Development - Managing the planning, construction, and renovation of sports facilities, from new change rooms, training grounds to stadium upgrades, requires specialised project management expertise. Competition Planning - Organising leagues, tournaments, and competitive seasons requires careful scheduling, resource allocation, and stakeholder management. Team Program Implementation - Coordinating training programs, youth development initiatives, and performance enhancement projects across sporting organisations. Community Programs - Managing outreach projects, grassroots development programs, and community sports initiatives. Technology Integration - Managing projects to implement new sports technology, from performance tracking systems to fan engagement platforms Sports Tourism - Coordinating sports tourism projects, training camps, and sporting exchanges. Commercial Opportunities - Sports organisations need project management skills to deliver sponsorship campaigns and other marketing initiatives. High-Performance Projects - Coordinating projects involving athletes, coaches, medical staff, and support teams to achieve sporting excellence. Media and Broadcasting - Managing projects related to sports coverage, streaming services, and digital content delivery for sporting events. Applying this knowledge to my work was one thing, but I have always been motivated to build a community of practice. With that in mind, I developed Mastering Project Management for Sport and Events. Based on the ground-breaking, long-term work of the Center for Project Innovation, the program is unique to sport and events and provides a suggestive structure for initiating, planning, delivering and closing projects.
