?? The Truth About School Vouchers: What Families Need to Know There’s been a lot of buzz around $10,000 school vouchers for private schools and homeschooling, but here’s the reality: ?? Private schools can admit whomever they choose. If your child doesn’t meet their standards, they can deny them admission—and they do not have to provide special education services, follow an IEP, or offer transportation. ?? Homeschooling isn’t a loophole for easy schooling. Parents are still responsible for providing instruction, maintaining portfolios, and ensuring compliance with state education laws. ?? The $10K Voucher Isn’t Guaranteed – Many states offer it as a reimbursement, meaning families must front the cost first. And even if they do receive the full amount, will $10K cover an entire year of private school tuition? If not, parents are left paying the difference. ?? As Texas Rep. Breaking Barriers: Honoring Dr. Sylvia Walker for Black History Month When we talk about pioneers in special education and disability advocacy, Dr. Sylvia Walker deserves a top spot in the conversation. A trailblazer, researcher, and fierce advocate, Dr. Walker spent her career ensuring Black and marginalized students with disabilities had access to equitable education and employment opportunities. As a professor at Howard University, she founded the Center for Disability and Socioeconomic Policy Studies, which focused on advancing research, policies, and programs that supported the education and employment of individuals with disabilities, particularly from underserved communities. ?? She served as Vice Chair of the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, shaping legislation and workplace policies that benefited disabled individuals. ??She was a driving force in establishing the idea that disability rights are civil rights, pushing for inclusion long before it became a mainstream conversation. ??Her legacy continues to inspire special educators, disability advocates, and policymakers today. ?? Breaking Barriers: Honoring Andrew Foster for Black History Month Andrew Foster, often called the ‘Father of Deaf Education in Africa’, was a groundbreaking educator and advocate who transformed education for the deaf community across the continent. ?? He became the first African American to graduate from Gallaudet University, paving the way for more diversity in the field of deaf education. ?? Founded the Christian Mission for the Deaf African in 1956, focusing on establishing schools, training centers, and teacher preparation programs. ?? Opened 32 schools for the deaf across 13 African countries, where many children received education for the first time. His work expanded access, increased representation, and empowered communities, ensuring that deaf students in Africa were no longer left behind. ??
