The Hydroponic Venture Project is a 501(c)(3) certified non profit organization. Our mission is to provide a pathway for youth education and engagement of bringing indoor hydroponic growing systems to Chicago Public Schools & local communities. We strive to provide exposure to a sustainable method of growing fresh produce with limited resources and encourage learning about the operation and sciences in sustainable agriculture. Students will also collaborate to develop fundraising opportunities to promote and support the project. All proceeds go towards funding systems for schools and communities in need. With this initiative, we hope to increase access and help distribute fresh food to neighborhoods in food deserts, food pantry, shelters, and the like. By literally and figuratively “growing together”, sharing the harvest by donating fresh produce to community members in need, students gain crucial experience to develop their team building, communication and relationship skills. This project fosters leadership and creativity in students and allows them to learn about making efficient choices for optimal food production via traditional ingredients. Additionally, students are introduced to economic principles along with the business management side of service initiatives which provide experience of an early start-up venture.

    "Together, we're not just growing fresh food: we're growing changemakers." -2024 Feed Your Mind Gala Young Changemaker Honoree Kai Fogelson We were absolutely honored to recognize Kai and his work through The Hydroponic Venture Project at this year's Gala! Kai and his student-led nonprofit team have helped bring sustainable grow towers to 15 Chicago Public Schools classrooms, 6 of which are also Pilot Light classrooms. Their work has helped make hands-on Food Education lessons accessible and sustainable for hundreds of students, and we are poised to reach even more classrooms together in the coming year.     What an incredible night last weekend at the Pilot Light Feed Your Mind Gala. I was extremely honored to be named the inaugural Young Change-maker Honoree for my work with The Hydroponic Venture Project. Being recognized by an organization as impactful as Pilot Light is incredibly humbling, and I’m thankful to be part of a community dedicated to addressing food insecurity and advancing food education in underserved communities. The Hydroponic Venture Project started as a passion to help dismantle barriers to healthy food access, and today, it’s a growing initiative with hydroponic towers in over 15 Chicago classrooms, empowering students to make informed food choices and discover sustainable agriculture hands-on. A special thanks to Tamara Golden and the entire Pilot Light team for their continuous mentorship and support. The relationships and experiences I’ve had with Pilot Light have been invaluable and I’m truly so grateful.     We are thrilled to announce that this year's Feed Your Mind Gala will include a tribute to our first-ever Young Changemaker Honoree, Kai Fogelson! Some of you may remember Kai from his time as a Pilot Light intern last summer. Since his time working with both our program and development teams to improve our systems and grow our impact, he has shown his dedication to Pilot Light teachers through his work at his own nonprofit, The Hydroponic Venture Project. We are so excited to honor Kai and his work with Pilot Light at this year's gala on November 1! Ross School of Business, planning to concentrate in finance and strategy while pursuing a minor in sustainability. Graduating with high honors from Walter Payton College Preparatory High School, Kai founded the Hydroponic Venture Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing pathways for youth education and engagement by introducing indoor hydroponic growing systems to Chicago Public Schools and local communities. With programs in 15 schools, reaching over 2,000 students and teachers, Kai is committed to changing the narrative around healthy eating and influencing others to make informed food choices through innovative and sustainable food education solutions.
