  • Strange Days of Roanoke: The Liberty Bell in Roanoke. The Roanoker Magazine features the Liberty Bell's visit to Roanoke in 1895, as a preview from their upcoming March/April 2025 issue. In October 1895, America’s Liberty Bell left Philadelphia for display at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia. An October 4 front page headline in the New York Times noted at least one stop along the route — Roanoke. “Liberty Bell Going to Atlanta; A Grand Demonstration to be Made at Roanoke in Its Honor.” Roanoke was one of several stops the bell made in its three-day journey by rail secured to a flatbed car pulled by a specially commissioned train of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Roanoke was well-prepared to celebrate its arrival. Aboard five Pullmans were top executives of the railroad, the mayor and a cadre of other officials with the City of Philadelphia and a military guard. An estimated 10,000 gathered to view the bell at Pennsylvania Station in Washington, D.C., on October 4. As with the other stops, there were speeches, music and much patriotic fervor for what newspapers described as the nation’s most sacred relic. From Washington, it passed through Fredericksburg, Richmond, Petersburg and Lynchburg before making its arrival in Roanoke at 5:40 p.m. on October 5. Learn More | https://lnkd.in/e5RDCd9Z?

Our friends at WDBJ7 joined the crowds at the Hotel Roanoke to see what makes this tradition so special. Roanoke County Parks & Rec’s Therapeutic Recreation division has been hosting this Valentine’s Dinner Dance for the last 39 years. Supervisor Devon Burnette said the event is designed to increase self-esteem, self-worth, skill building, and independence. • Faux Bois: The Art of Imitating Wood | We appreciate your patience as we work to preserve and restore the architectural plaster (faux bois) in our historic lobby, an essential part of The Hotel Roanoke's rich heritage. During this restoration, some areas of the lobby may be temporarily inaccessible. Artist and sculptor, Brenda Councill, (www.councill.net) is on site to restore and enhance the original “ Faux Bois."?She currently specializes in large-scale murals, particularly domed ceilings, tackling projects that often put her high in the world of art. She recently completed The Largest Contemporary Painted Dome in the Southeast. Councill has been doing such large-scale projects for the past 20 years, the latest phase in her 50?year, award-winning career. Her projects span the globe and can extend for months with large-scale ceiling and wall murals and Public Art installed in landmark buildings and public spaces. Faux bois, which translates from French to "false wood," is an artistic technique that involves creating the illusion of wood grain and texture on various surfaces. This art form has been utilized for centuries to enhance the aesthetic appeal of objects and structures, transforming mundane materials into visually striking works that mimic the natural beauty of wood.
