I am pleased to share a new publication that I co-authored with my former SWOG colleagues. My gratitude to my co-authors, to the patients without whom this work wouldn't be possible, and to SWOG Cancer Research Network and The Hope Foundation for Cancer Research for supporting this research. In this article, we examined the association between patient-reported outcomes and neighborhood deprivation among women with breast cancer participating in clinical trials for symptom management. We found that women residing in more deprived neighborhoods experienced reduced functional well-being and increased pain at baseline (enrollment). While some of these disparities were explained by patient characteristics, our findings suggest that screening patients for community-level needs (even when they have access to clinical trials) is important to identify factors that may negatively impact their survivorship experience. Neighborhood deprivation is multi-dimensional and intersects with other factors (e.g., race, ethnicity, insurance type) that have been shown to be associated with worse outcomes among patients with cancer. This exposure to multiple levels of disparities may further increase the risk of poor outcomes for cancer survivors and needs rigorous examination in future studies. https://lnkd.in/ggSgsuSU
