Do Better. Show the Salary. Earn Your Wings. WWW.Winglessunicorns.org
关于我们
In 2015 Nonprofit AF founder Vu Lee wrote the post "When you don't disclose salary range on a job posting, a unicorn loses its wings." Today there are 10 states in the U.S. with enacted pay transparency laws. And that's a good thing! Stating a salary range not only ensures your hiring process (and thus your organization as a whole) is more equitable, but it actively combats gender, racial, and other forms of bias. So, you'd think the social impact sector would be all over this, right? Well, unfortunately they are.....not. Way too many organizations, educational institutions, foundations and social enterprises are still stuck in the past and refuse to give pay transparency, even when leaders in our sector have been talking about it for years! Inspired by #Crappy Funding Practices, the Home for Wingless Unicorns is a place to gather all those organizations hiring today who we hope to include salary ranges tomorrow. Please contribute if you either have a posting to share at bit.ly/WINGLESSUNICORNS

?? We know the healthcare industry is notorious for bad practices, but can’t we ask nonprofits to do better?!?!?!?! ?? Check out some incredibly UNHEALTHY practices from health-oriented orgs this week—including a couple of repeat offenders. SSM Health OneWorld Community Health Centers Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden Alzheimer's Association? Mental Health Cooperative We guess WORKERS aren't the folx they most care about providing care to - because, pssst, the easiest way to signal you value healthy employer-employee relations is to ?? SHOW. THE. SALARY. LINE. ?? ?? If you see an org whose practices are sick (and not in a good way), please share at https://lnkd.in/eVP7VKku. Let’s keep the pressure on - ya know, like you’re supposed to do with a wound, because we're tired of letting this one bleed!

Another week, another batch of organizations keeping their salary ranges top secret. We’re calling out ten offenders, including a repeat repeat repeat offender (Springwell, Inc.), an organization posting in a state with a *pay transparency law* (Fordham University School of Law in NY), and one that two different people submitted separately to us (The Neighborhood Academy—it seems that you’ve really made an impression). Here’s who made this week’s Wall of Shame: National Headache Foundation The Neighborhood Academy University of Tennessee College of Social Work Compass Health Center Foundation of HOPE George Junior Republic Felician Sisters of North America The Training & Education Fund Springwell, Inc. Fordham University School of Law Have you come across a job posting without a salary listed? Feel free to *anonymously* submit them for our weekly post.

FOUNDATIONS LOVE TRANSPARENCY... UNTIL IT’S ABOUT THEM. Foundations: "Show us your budget! Tell us how you’ll sustain this program! How will you recognize us for all of eternity?! Break down your staff salaries!" Also, Foundations: "Whoa there, you wanna know what we pay our own staff? That’s PRIVATE." This week, nearly all of our submissions were foundations or philanthropy service orgs that demand transparency from others but won’t share salary info in their own job postings: ? Foellinger Foundation ? Marshall County Community Foundation ? Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation ? Fidelity Foundations ? NEUBAUER FAMILY FOUNDATION ? Indiana Philanthropy Alliance Foundations wield enormous influence in the nonprofit sector, and their reluctance to share salary information sets a terrible precedent. If they expect transparency from the organizations they fund, why not lead by example? We’ll keep asking. And asking. And asking. Wanna help? Drop a comment or tag them. Maybe they just forgot to add the salary. ?? We also think that Crappy Funding Practices might care about this one, too. ??

About 25% of this week’s submissions from you all featured job postings that have mysteriously vanished after we received them (read: they were unpublished from the various job sites). Now, we’d love to believe these organizations saw the error of their ways—perhaps a sudden revelation that a job description without a salary is like a unicorn without its wings. So, naturally, they unpublished them to make the necessary corrections. That might be wishful thinking, but hey, we’re all about hope and accountability 'round these parts. So, while we wait to see if those postings return *with* salaries, we’d love to see the following organizations take the same enlightened path: Samaritan's Feet International Partners for Rural Impact Cleveland Ballet SAAVETX EF Friends Community School Aga Khan Foundation USA CPWR--The Center for Construction Research and Training Neighborhood Health P.S. Spotted a job posting without a salary that hasn’t mysteriously disappeared? Send it our way! https://lnkd.in/ejveX8-Z

January was 1,000 Days Long, and So Is Our Rage We did it, everyone. We survived January. Barely. But at what cost? This month dragged on for approximately one metric eternity, and somehow, amidst the existential exhaustion, we still had to witness a never-ending parade of nonprofits refusing to do the absolute bare minimum—posting salary ranges in their job listings. This week’s offenders include: Human Rights Watch Federal Public Defender - Western District of PA Waldorf School of Pittsburgh The Salvation Army Meridian Public Charter School Springwell, Inc. Norfolk State University University of Nebraska-Lincoln Femena AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) - REPEAT OFFENDER ALERT. Y'all, come on. This is the third time you've been on this list. YEESH. We get it. We're all so tired. Can we please, just for one minute, get a break from this nonsense? Just a brief, blissful pause where nonprofits do the bare minimum and tell job seekers what they’d actually be paid? Is that too much to ask?? Salary transparency isn't just a nice-to-have. It’s about equity, respect, and not wasting people’s time. Do better. List the damn salaries already.

AW SHUCKS MOMENT AHEAD. We got a shoutout in this fabulous article by Rachel Bruns about salary transparency. Guess we’re officially ?famous? now. Seriously though, Rachel nailed it: not posting a salary range isn’t just a bad look—it’s wasting everyone’s time, including your own. Transparency isn’t hard, folks, but it is the bare minimum for equity. Thanks, Rachel, for keeping it real and calling out the nonsense.
Thanks Des Moines Business Record for publishing my article on the positive impact of showing the wage/salary on job openings for Iowa businesses. Special thanks to Candice at Imagine Impact, The Home for Wingless Unicorns, Iowa Nonprofit Alliance, YNPN Des Moines, and Iowa Council of Foundations for being leaders in the nonprofit space locally and nationally that I could reference. #Nonprofits #Iowa #Business #Jobs #SalaryTransparency Read the article here:

Ben Bisbee cracked us up this morning. Not only because of the memory of our first (unpaid) nonprofit internship which wanted us to carry a 75 pound box of programs 17 blocks in NYC to avoid a $7.25 pickup fee from UPS ??
Nonprofits, I’ll make a deal with you. If you don’t want to start sharing salary information in job descriptions could you at least list a few examples of 25lbs-50lbs items you’re always highlighting is essentail to occasionally lift? Is part of the job moving fax machines or boxes of books, maybe a modest crate of cheese? Will someone be holding two toddlers for some reason at this office job? Because you almost *never* miss an opportunity to highlight that essential responsibility-oriented tidbit and the vagueness isn’t alluring enough anymore when we don’t even know the potential salary. Thanks. #jobs #jobdescriptions #salary #nonprofit #career #equity

In a time when #DEI initiatives are under attack—even at the highest levels of government—resistance matters. Social justice organizations should be at the forefront of that resistance, setting the standard for equity and inclusion, not falling short. When nonprofits fail to uphold equitable practices in their own hiring, it sends a troubling message: the fight for justice stops at their doorstep. WE'RE LOOKING AT YOU ?? : Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation Middle East Institute Florida Justice Institute (FJI) Americans for Immigrant Justice Americares StepUp Wilmington Global Health Ministries Take the Florida Justice Institute, for example. Their job posting for an Individual Cases Staff Attorney says: “Must have a demonstrated commitment to social justice, as well as a commitment to representing incarcerated people and other disenfranchised individuals, and an interest in the preservation and advancement of civil liberties and civil rights.” AND “Must understand and value racial equity and be committed to continued learning on issues related to race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.” SUCH powerful words, right? But then... no salary listed. ?? Let’s be clear: wage transparency is essential. Keeping salaries secret disproportionately harms women and people of color and undermines the very equity these organizations claim to champion. Transparency in compensation isn’t just a good look; it’s a moral imperative. Social justice organizations need to do better. You can’t fight for justice out in the world while perpetuating inequities in your own practices. Let’s keep pushing for change until they all get their wings. ??? P.S. If you spot a job posting without a salary range, help us hold them accountable—submit it to our Call-In Form at https://lnkd.in/ejveX8-Z
