Dear Friends, ? In the wake of Hurricane Helene, my community is dealing with the devastation of this climate-driven extreme weather event. I’m grateful that my family in SC and NC is safe and healthy although some had to evacuate and some have experienced catastrophic loss. In the region we’ve seen homes,?businesses, cars, and farm equipment washed away, 75% of Greenville County in South Carolina is still without power, and families are displaced. The economic impact of closed businesses is far-reaching.?Our hearts go out to the communities grappling with the destruction caused by climate-driven extreme weather. We are deeply grateful to the first responders and lineworkers who are putting their safety on the line to help others. There are many stories about our local nonprofit leaders who experienced loss themselves and showed up the next day to open their organizations to support the community-I’m looking at you @Caroline Robertson with Greer Relief & Resources Agency Relief and Tessa Porter May May with Loaves & Fishes Greenville! You, nonprofiteers, are inspiring! ? The catastrophic damage we’re witnessing across the Southeast is a direct result of the climate crisis. If we continue with business as usual—relying heavily on fossil fuels—these disasters will only become more common, more intense, and more deadly. We need to act urgently to transition to clean energy and support leaders who are committed to addressing the climate crisis head-on, rather than ignoring the growing threat. ? We cannot forget that in extreme and desperate situations like this, inequity reigns. Disasters like Hurricane Helene don’t impact all communities equally. Vulnerable populations—those already struggling with poverty, lack of resources, and systemic injustice—are hit the hardest. While wealthier neighborhoods may recover more quickly with the support of insurance and infrastructure, marginalized communities often face a longer, more difficult road to rebuilding.?If we truly want to build resilience for the future, we must commit to creating systems that protect all people, not just those with the resources to withstand these challenges. Climate justice must be at the center of how we move forward, ensuring fair and equitable recovery efforts for everyone. ? Thank you for the work you do. Beth Ellen P.S.
