Our own Amber Gabel, representing The History Museum and dressed in our South Bend Blue Sox replica uniform, was at Four Winds Field helping the South Bend Cubs introduce Ivy at a pre-game ceremony. Ivy honors the legacy of the South Bend Blue Sox, a team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

The History Museum comprises a 38-room Oliver Mansion, known as Copshaholm and once home to the J.D. Oliver family. All furnishings in the house are original to the home, providing a remarkable glimpse of how the family lived. Two acres of lush gardens surround the mansion. The Worker’s Home is a charming cottage reflecting life in the 1930s. The History Museum’s seven galleries include both permanent and temporary exhibits, and include a gallery that focuses on Notre Dame history. The museum is the national repository of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, whose story was immortalized in the film, A League of Their Own. The History Museum is located just eight blocks west of downtown South Bend, adjacent to the Studebaker National Museum.

We have a winner in the July voting for the your favorite dollhouses in "Lifting the Roof." First place is the Guske Dollhouse (copper roof). Second place is Mo Miller's Victorian Manor (winding staircase). And third place honors go to the White Victorian home by Emma Kish Rodgers (with Santa in first floor room). Stop in the exhibit this month to vote for your favorites!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Bainbridge, who served as Senior Curator for The History Museum for over 30 years. His legacy is outstanding, and our memories of him are warm. Dave oversaw all the curatorial details when the Oliver Family donated their 38-room Copshaholm to us. He guided the museum’s move from its home in the 1855 Courthouse to its new building on the grounds of Copshaholm. He worked steadfastly to achieve for the exhibit “Picturing Lincoln” the loan of the Gettsyburg Address--written in Abraham Lincoln’s own hand. He was given the Merle Blue Award for his impact on history education. These are but some of Dave’s many achievements while he was at the museum. Equally significant were Dave’s love of history, his endearing sense of humor, and his caring ways. Dave, you already have a place in our hearts; now you will have a place in history as well.
