Millions of people die every year from treatable noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), which include type 1 diabetes. With half the world's population lacking essential health services, many are not receiving the care they need. The NCD Alliance is mobilizing global action to provide diagnostics, medicines, and care to address these gaps. With their call to #LeadOnNCDs, the Alliance is urging global leaders to implement and invest in effective NCD policies. Helmsley is proud to be a part of this movement to champion health equity. We are committed to ensuring that everyone, and especially the most vulnerable, has access to the care they need. Join the movement: https://lnkd.in/ed7M3wbA #Type1Diabetes #T1D #ActOnNCDs #NCDs

Business Pacific News recently interviewed Helmsley Trustee Walter Panzirer about our Rural Healthcare Program's expansion into Hawaii with a $10.6 million grant to Wilcox Medical Center. This grant, the largest ever made to Wilcox, will support the purchase of an MRI machine and other imaging services. Panzirer emphasized that our grant to Wilcox is "just building upon what they already have to really drive care home." Our Rural Healthcare Program is dedicated to bringing better care closer to home, and when it comes to our grantmaking in places like Hawaii, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands, this means ensuring that patients don't have to fly for care. This is only the beginning of our grantmaking in Hawaii, as Panzirer added that there will be "several more grants in the near future ... to really try and improve health, whether it's behavioral health, tertiary care, or telemedicine." People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which encompasses Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, need multi-disciplinary care teams including mental health professionals, nutritionists, and gastroenterologists. For people with IBD to receive the optimal care, they need to be able to efficiently communicate with their providers, their data and medical records need to be readily accessible and coordinated between specialists, and their providers need to be able to easily communicate with each other. A globally championed initiative led by Crohn's Colitis Cure (CCCure) and supported by Helmsley seeks to address those needs. CCCure is designing a consumer portal that will improve data sharing and link patient reported data to their clinical data, providing their healthcare providers with a better understanding of their medical needs and access to all their medical records in one place. Additionally, this consumer portal will allow people with IBD to communicate directly with their care team and have curated clinical information and resources for specific needs delivered directly to them. This consumer portal will improve disease management for individuals with IBD. Pilot testing for this portal is expected to begin in 2025. Many people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are unable to access specialized endocrinology care due to a shortage of endocrinologists, and are seen by primary care doctors to manage their T1D. A recently published study by Project ECHO demonstrates that primary care doctors in rural areas who participate in weekly ECHO telementoring sessions can reduce A1C levels in their patients with diabetes. These patients were able to achieve A1C levels similar to patients who are seen by an endocrinology specialist. By lowering A1C levels, these patients are at reduced risk for developing further complications. This indicates that the ECHO Model has the capacity to bring specialized healthcare to people with diabetes, including T1D, no matter where they live. Adoption of the ECHO model has been shown to improve the health and well-being of people in rural and underserved communities. September is #SuicidePreventionMonth, and today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay. Access to mental health care is an essential part of community health, and we work to reduce suicide attempts through innovative initiatives. We've partnered with The Trevor Project to promote a series of educational videos aimed at reducing LGBTQ+ youth suicide in rural areas of the United States. The Trevor Project's work towards reducing suicide in LGBTQ+ young people has been particularly impactful, and we're excited for this intersectional campaign to support #suicideprevention. We've also supported the creation of EmPATH units at CentraCare in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Sheridan County Memorial Hospital in Sheridan, Wyoming, and Billings Clinic in Billings, Montana. EmPATH units provide calm environments where people experiencing a mental health crisis can receive treatment as an alternative to a traditional emergency room. They can offer an important entry point to behavioral health treatment, especially in rural areas. We helped launch Virtual Crisis Care, which works to prevent imprisonment or involuntary hospitalization for those experiencing mental health crises by connecting law enforcement officers to mental health professionals through tablets. When officers used Virtual Crisis Care, the majority of situations were de-escalated and avoid further conflict. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eEhmXuAi

Private health insurance is complicated, even for clinical teams that work with insurers regularly. Sign up for “Private Health Insurance 101,” a webinar on September 10th (1-1:130PM), to learn about the major types of private health insurance in the U.S. as well as how differences in insurance plans affect people living with insulin-requiring diabetes and the providers who care for them. T1D Exchange will host speakers from the Center on Health Insurance Reforms (CHIR) at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. This session will be especially relevant for clinical support teams working with patients who require insulin.
