Championing Latino prosperity through advanced education and scholarships for students in Texas.

关于我们

The mission of the Hector and Gloria López Foundation is to provide post-secondary educational opportunities for Latino students in Texas, specifically students from El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, South Texas, and the Rio Grande Valley. We invest in scholarships and support for students who are Latino, the first in their family to attend college or university, and are financially under-resourced in their ability to pay for advanced education.

Meet Andrea P. A., our new Hector and Gloria López Foundation Database Manager! Andrea hails from The University of Texas at Austin, where she received a B.S. and M.S. in Health Behavior, with a concentration in Statistics. Raised in Laredo, Texas, Andrea shares, “As a first-generation Latina from a border city, I bring a perspective shaped by firsthand experience with systemic inequities in public health, education, and social programs. This perspective drives me to leverage research, data, and statistical analyses to quantify these inequities and lead data-driven initiatives that develop measurable, impactful strategies to address disparities and foster meaningful change.” We are lucky to have such a dedicated leader on board. Please join us in welcoming Andrea!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak at the Excelencia in Education annual convening in Washington, DC. I was excited to share the reasons that the Hector and Gloria López Foundation looks to the Seal of Excelencia as a strong indicator of a university’s intentional support of first-gen Latino students. Many thanks to the colleges and universities attending the conference and doing the hard work, and to Sarita Brown and Deborah Santiago for leading the charge!

This summer, our López Scholars were busy embracing remarkable opportunities to grow personally, academically, and professionally. ?? Our scholars traveled internationally, where they could deepen their cultural understanding and emerge as stronger multicultural leaders. ?? López Scholars completed internships on- and off-campus and across the U.S., gaining valuable insights into various industries and jump-starting their professional careers. ?? Lastly, we are proud of our Scholars who participated in research-focused experiences like the McNair Scholars program to solidify their academic and research skills. Their dedication to research helps advance our mission to boost representation in the field! We’re excited to see our López Scholars making strides in their leadership development, future careers, and academia. These opportunities have set the tone for an exciting 2024-2025 school year. We are beyond proud of our future leaders!

As students return to campus and 75 new López Scholars begin their higher education journeys, I want to take a moment to share reflections on the conversations held with Scholars and our university partners over the last several weeks. I had the opportunity to attend orientations at 3 new partner universities in San Antonio last week. The best part of those meetings with new López Scholars and their families is hearing their personal stories. One young man approached me and told me he is an aspiring international business major from a rural community who is excited about his future prospects. A young woman from Brownsville shared how she moved far away from her family to go to the school of her dreams and she wouldn’t have been able to do it without the scholarship. Her brothers and sisters are watching her closely. I also met a young woman from Austin and her parents, who are first-generation Americans with roots in Monterrey, Mexico. The story of Gloria's father, Dr. Jose García, and his Mexican roots resonated strongly with them. The stories were endless, but across Scholars and parents, they all had one thing in common - they are seeking a better future and they know that a university education is the key to that success. These are the individuals and dreams that my aunt and uncle envisioned supporting when they founded the Hector and Gloria López Foundation. To López Scholars and your parents, I see your resilience and strength. Never forget that you belong here, and we are eager to see all you will accomplish. To our partner universities, thank you for being stewards of education and committed to our shared mission and the mission each of you serve.
