The Heart Institute East Texas Pioneering the Path to Success: Over 150 Life-Altering WATCHMAN Procedures Performed to Prevent Strokes The Heart Institute of East Texas (HIET) is excited to announce another major milestone for the Deep East Texas area. The WATCHMAN left atrial appendage closure program, to prevent strokes in patients with Atrial Fibrillation, was started in March 2018 when HIET Cardiologists placed the first WATCHMAN device at St. Luke's Health-Memorial Lufkin. Since that time, the program has significantly expanded in the volume of implants, with a focus on excellence in quality and patient safety. It is now the first and largest program in Deep East Texas with more than 150 WATCHMAN procedures performed since its inception, with more than 120 performed in the last 3 years alone.
