It was never just about building a space—it’s always been about creating an experience, a feeling that stays with people long after they leave. Some people wait to see something before they believe in it. I see it first—before it ever takes shape.? That’s the magic of design, of storytelling, of bringing something entirely new to life. But bringing a vision to life takes the right people. I met Jon Moroney in the spring of 2023 at @kcadoffsu, where I’m an alumna. Jon is the professor and chair of the Product Design program and a powerhouse behind the Innovation Hub, where he connects students with real-world projects that shape the Grand Rapids community. When it came to The Hatfield, Jon helped pull together an incredible team—an architect, an interior designer, a graphic designer, and more.? For nine weeks, we worked side by side, researching, conceptualizing, and creating the visuals that laid the groundwork for what The Hatfield is today. Jon’s leadership, knowledge, and relentless support have been unmatched. He’s been a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of ideas (even if we still debate about curtains and leaf-free water features!). His belief in this project has meant the world. Talking to people about The Hatfield lights a fire in me- especially when I get to talk about how it is different than any event venue we've seen in Grand Rapids. When I was dreaming up the space, I imagined comfortable seating where people are able to catch up and have conversations. I thought of space that has areas where you can connect one-on-one vs just an open ballroom or event room. I imagined space that highlights not only the beauty of nature in Michigan but also a space that showcases local artists and talent from our community.?
