A book we’re loving right now: True Gretch: What I’ve Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything In Between by Gretchen Whitmer. In it she writes about Trump calling her “That woman from Michigan” and her refusal to let him bully her. “To this day, people are still selling That Woman from Michigan stickers, mugs, shirts, candles (scented with ‘lime, rose, geranium, and musk’), pillows, trucker hats, and even nail polish (handmade, toxin- and cruelty-free, in Traverse City). So, it was not only good for me, you could argue that it’s been good for Michigan’s Etsy community. And it only happened because I refused to let the president define me. Today we honor the transgender people who have been killed in acts of anti-trans violence. During the past few years we’ve seen transgender people used as political pawns by conservatives who would like us to believe that transgender people pose a threat to public safety. In reality, transgender people live under constant threat of discrimination, harassment, and violence. #TransgenderDayOfRemembrance began in 1999 and every year the list of transgender people killed grows. The hateful rhetoric used to marginalize transgender people only increases this danger. TGP is all for Corewell Health #nurses unionizing. In 2023, we worked with the Michigan Nurses Association to promote the Safe Patient Care Act, legislation that would have limited the number of patients nurses are assigned, ended forced overtime, and made hospitals publicly disclose nurse to patient ratios. Sadly, the SPCA was killed in committee. Nurses and their patients deserve better. At The Guerrilla Politic we do love some guerrilla art. A 43 foot tall naked Trump statue has been popping up across the country, including in Detroit, as part of what the artist calls the “Crooked and Obscene Tour,” and we are here for it.
