We might only have a fortnight or so of summer left here in Australia, but we’re still well-and-truly in snake season. And as the University of Sydney’s Professor Greg Neely tells us in the latest episode of our Debate@Go8 podcast series, snake bites are a huge problem all-year round, being the second biggest tropical health issue – second only to malaria – with about 5 million people bitten each year. In this fascinating new episode, Professor Neely explains the groundbreaking work he and his team at the Charles Perkins Centre are doing using gene-editing technology to develop new, accessible treatments for cobra and other snake bites and even box jellyfish stings. The Group of Eight looks forward to you joining the team Professor Guy Littlefair ! You are joining a research powerhouse in the West and on the global stage at a time when student experience and engagement has never been so critical for all who study and research with us.Amit Chakma The University of Western Australia
This week sees me transition from Auckland University of Technology to The University of Western Australia. After almost eight years at AUT as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies; and then in addition, five years as the Pro Vice-Chancellor International, I am proud to leave behind a strong environment. The faculty has regrown after the pandemic and is now the largest academic entity in the university. Together with my leadership team, we have accomplished a transformation of the programmes, culture, and research. We have also, reconfigured the schools to align them better for both graduate outcomes and to mirror industry professional practices. Within International, AUT has purposely grown market share and continues to be a wonderful destination university for students wishing to study in NZ. As the second largest on-shore university for in-country students, there will continue to be commitment, tenacity, and strategy propelling the international team. As the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education and Student Experience) at UWA, I lead an exciting and key portfolio spanning both core activities and adjacencies. For me, education is absolutely about the experience and is in no way, simply a product. The ambition of the UWA senior leadership team is inspiring, if not infectious, and I am thrilled to have been provided this opportunity to - advance the student experience; grow and deepen global partnerships; and, support the academic community in the shift towards an omnichannel university. I will miss my teams and senior colleagues at AUT for sure, but it is time for me, once again, to accept the baton of transformation, this time serving UWA as I “Seek Wisdom”.

The Group of Eight had the pleasure of attending the Fulbright Scholarship Gala Dinner at Parliament House in Canberra, to celebrate all the Fulbright Scholars for 2025, and especially the 18 senior, postdoctoral and postgraduate Go8 Scholars heading to prestigious US institutions this year. Of the US Scholars coming the other way as part of the exchange program, 15 are heading to Go8 member universities. In the featured photos are Dr. Edward Attenborough (left) from Monash University going to University of Alabama at Birmingham to continue his research on advancing biodegradable microbial polymers for packaging and medical applications; Dr. David Motorniak (right) also from Monash University is going to study for Masters in Public Health Ethics; and the team representing the University of Adelaide, including Co-Chair of the Go8 Defence and Security Committee, Lieutenant General (Rtd) Rick Burr AO DSC MV (far right). The Fulbright Program is the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the United States of America, aimed at increasing binational research collaboration, cultural understanding, and the exchange of ideas. Fulbright Australia is a non-profit organisation sponsored by the U.S. and Australian governments and other institutional and business partners, private bequests and endowments. Great to have some members of The Group of Eight Indigenous Leadership Group at Go8 HQ today. The informal get-together was an opportunity for some pre-planning for the year ahead and discussion about our priorities for 2025. While there is still much work for Go8 members to do – particularly in increasing the numbers of First?Nations students at our universities and on completion –?our collective record on outcomes is strong. The Go8 retention rate for Indigenous students was 79% in 2022,?well above the sector average of under 71%. Vicki Thomson Matthew Brown Tristan Kennedy Leanne Holt Barry Judd
