GRIT. It’s a word we hear often—resilience, toughness, an unwillingness to quit. But do we really understand it until life truly tests us? I lost my sister, Lexi, to Leukemia (AML) when she was just 13. I lost my dad to a heart attack shortly after turning 59. (Go see your cardiologist yearly). I could have shut down. I could have played the victim. But I refuse. I refuse to let tragedy define me. I refuse to feel sorry for myself. Instead, I choose to make every day count. I’m not sure if I have GRIT—but after everything I’ve endured, I’d like to think I do. Life will test all of us. It will knock us down, take people we love, and challenge our will to keep going. But what matters is what we do next. Here’s what I’ve learned about overcoming setbacks and making a comeback: ? Feel It, But Don’t Dwell – Acknowledge the pain, but don’t let it consume you. Healing means honoring the past while still moving forward. ? Find Your Purpose – When life takes something from you, find something worth fighting for. A mission, a goal, a reason to keep pushing. ? Surround Yourself with the Right People – Strength isn’t just about what you do alone. Find people who lift you up, not those who keep you stuck. ? Control What You Can, Release What You Can’t – We can’t rewrite the past, but we can shape the future. Focus on what’s within your power. ? Take Action, Even When It’s Hard – Progress happens in small steps. Even on the worst days, keep moving forward. GRIT isn’t about never falling—it’s about rising, every single time. If you’re facing something difficult, remember: your story isn’t over. Keep pushing. Keep fighting. Make every day count. I like to start my day with good intentions, so I got on my bike in my cold unfinished basement. No excuses. You don’t need perfect conditions.
