关于我们
Our Mission Statement: Inspiring sustainable growth of a healthy urban community through trees, green spaces, food, education, training and job opportunities. We aspire to provide a greener tomorrow for our Detroit. The Greening of Detroit is a well-established nonprofit resource agency with a long history of successful and progressive initiatives. All of our work adds economic value to the communities we serve, and focuses on using land in a way that improves quality of life, has environmental integrity and promotes education and stewardship. Most of all, The Greening provides hope for the future of the city of Detroit. Between 1950 and 1980, around 500,000 trees were lost in Detroit to Dutch elm disease, urban expansion and attrition. During that same time, economic constraints prohibited the city from replacing those trees. The Greening of Detroit was founded in 1989 with a single focus in mind – restore the city's tree infrastructure. At The Greening, we believe in tomorrow's Detroit and expect to play a significant role in the development to this great city. The abundance of vacant land – spanning more than 20 square miles of the city – allows for a blank canvas of opportunity and new beginnings. That means more room for trees, green open spaces, prairies, urban farms and pocket parks. It also means job opportunities for city kids and adult workforce trainees. We look forward to working with our community residents to grow tomorrow's Detroit.

We have the goal of planting 75,000 trees between 2023 and 2028. The Greening of Detroit, DTE Energy, and City of Detroit celebrated reaching 25,000 trees in the ground with a special planting today. The group is organized as the Detroit Tree Equity Partnership. The ceremony, held at Detroit’s Bailey Park in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood, featured Senator Debbie Stabenow, Mayor Mike Duggan, DTE Chairman Jerry Norcia, Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corporation Founder Katrina Watkins, and our President Lionel Bradford. Thank you to all who joined us and helped us celebrate this milestone!

Meet Geno! ?? We asked Geno, our Green Corps Program Manager, why he loves the Greening: "For me, it's the incredible privilege of working with the vibrant youth of Detroit. Having started as a Team Leader in this transformative program, I've seen firsthand the power of mentorship and education in shaping young minds. What truly ignites my passion is the opportunity to instill a love for the environment in these future leaders. Detroit holds a special place in my heart, and seeing the enthusiasm of our youth to engage in environmental stewardship fills me with hope and pride. We're not just teaching about environmental issues; we're cultivating the next generation of stewards who will protect our planet for years to come. It's a responsibility I take to heart, and I'm honored to be able to make a difference. Together, we're sowing the seeds of a greener, more sustainable tomorrow" Learn more about our programs: www.greeningofdetroit.com

Thank you to The New York Times for highlighting the collaborative effort to bring a public art piece that is socially relevant to the Canfield Consortium Art Park. This permanent installation by regenerative land sculptor and artist-in-residence, Jordan Weber addresses environmental racism, arming East Canfield Village residents with insights into air quality and sustainable tools to reclaim and uplift their community. This project is an integral part of Earth Futures, Sidewalk Detroit's public art initiative and artist-in-residence program covering issues of climate crisis like air quality and water pollution through the lens of spatial equity and public art. This work wouldn't be possible without fabricators Ben Wolf and Juan Martinez and community partners JustAir, Ecology Center, The Greening of Detroit and American Forests.
