Wildlife research isn’t about comfort—it’s about adapting to the harsh environments in which these animals live. From blistering heat to freezing cold and everything in between, researchers must adjust to these conditions in order to monitor populations and behaviors effectively. ????? To prepare for winter fieldwork, a GBI crew joined forces with the USFS for a comprehensive five-day training focused on navigating backcountry snow conditions. The training covered avalanche awareness, snowmobile operations, snow tracking, and non-invasive species sampling. Crews also learned to operate and maintain equipment like trail cameras, track plates, and automatic scent dispensers. This prep is essential to safely and effectively carry out carnivore monitoring in wildfire-affected landscapes across Idaho and Oregon. The work will focus on species like fishers, lynxes, wolverines, martens, and montane red foxes, and will incorporate cutting-edge research techniques, including eDNA sampling and AI-based data management. This rigorous preparation ensures GBI teams are equipped to support the USFS’s important multiregional efforts to better understand and protect wildlife in priority wildfire crisis landscapes.
