This week we recall the hopeful vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and that change can come if you don’t give up. Our thoughts are also with those impacted by the Eaton and Pacific Palisades fires. The Gooden Center stayed open for business but many people and community members weren’t so fortunate. In 1962, Bishop Robert Burton Gooden and five local members of Alcoholics Anonymous established the Bishop Gooden Home in Pasadena as a haven for people to escape the ravages of alcoholism and drug addiction and begin putting their lives back together. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Gooden Center offers residential inpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorders, outpatient care and transitional housing, and is in network with most HMO, EPO and PPO insurance programs. An exciting project is now underway — the restoration of the historic exterior of the Bishop Gooden Home in Pasadena’s Playhouse District. Built in 1894, it is one of the neighborhood’s last surviving Victorian residences. And since 1962, it has been a unique safe haven where people can escape the ravages of alcoholism and drug addiction and begin putting their lives back together. The needed repairs and replacement of the cedar shingles and redwood siding, and painting of exterior, are expected to take six months. The Gooden Center’s flagship facility will re-emerge in 2025 looking better than it has in generations. The renovation efforts not only preserve its character-defining features, but will make it comfortable and livable for years to come. Hochman House in Pasadena — one of The Gooden Center’s six-bed mental health facilities — has a new look. The exterior of the Georgian-style home has been repainted, thanks to a grant from the Ann Peppers Foundation. Built in 1927, it is first and foremost a home, albeit a temporary one, and a place of healing. The Fourth of July is about family and spending time with people we love. It is also about freedom and independence. Work has been underway since 2022 to make major improvements at Hochman House, one of The Gooden Center’s six-bed mental health facilities.
