If you visit an orchard supported by Food Well Alliance’s Giving Grove program (Atlanta), you’ll likely see muscadines. A muscadine is a grape native to the southeastern U.S., known for its thick skin, high antioxidants, and sweet, tangy flavor. Thriving in warm, humid climates, it’s often used for wine, juice, and preserves. Program Manager Fred Conrad shared why he values muscadines in the humid south: ?? “In my experience growing both types [of muscadines], the smooth, flat, hairless muscadine foliage causes dew and precipitation to bead up and roll off the foliage. That allows them to dry faster and makes them less susceptible to powdery mildew than the often more textured and slightly pubescent bunch-grape foliage.” ???? [photo courtesy of Food Well Alliance]
