The George Washington International Law Review is a student-published journal that presents articles and essays on public and private international financial development, comparative law, and public international law. GWILR is published quarterly and staffed by GW Law JD students. Additionally, the International Law Review annually publishes the Guide to International Legal Research. The Guide is an authoritative and comprehensive reference tool organized by geographic regions and substantive areas of international law. The International Law Review is staffed and run by GW Law JD students selected as a result of their academic achievements and their performance in the annual writing competition. Meet our esteemed keynote speaker, Wajahat Ali. Wajahat Ali has given speeches around the world such as TED, The Aspen Ideas Festival, Google, the United Nations, and The New Yorker Festival. His writing appears regularly in the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, and The Guardian. He is a Senior Fellow at The Western States Center and Auburn Seminary and co-host of Al Jazeera’s “The Stream.” His memoir Go Back to Where You Came From, one of Amazon’s Best Books of the Year, follows his life as a Muslim Pakistani-American on a surprising, emotional, and challenging quest for the good life. He is also a recovering attorney and playwright.

With over 73 elections in the 2024 Super-Cycle,?this symposium will offer a legal reflection on the state of democracy globally, including panels on election access, trust, and security. Meet our esteemed panelists who will be discussing election security: Sabrina Siddiqui is a national politics reporter at the Wall Street Journal, where she has reported on the White House and the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections.?She will be moderating this final panel. Sebastian Bay is a researcher and project manager specialising in election security and hybrid threats. His election expertise is grounded in managing multiple projects to reduce electoral risks, enhance resilience, and establish effective response and recovery mechanisms for Sweden’s 2018 and 2022 general elections. David Levine is a senior fellow at the University of Maryland’s Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement. He is also an election security professor at George Mason University, an advisory committee member for the Global Cyber Alliance's Cybersecurity Toolkit for Elections, an advisory council member for The Election Reformers Network, a member of the Election Verification Network, and a contributor to the Fulcrum. Lisa Poggiali joins IFES with over fifteen years of experience working at the intersection of technology, democracy, and human rights. Most recently, Lisa served as the Senior Democracy, Data, and Technology Specialist at USAID, where she helped develop the Agency’s digital democracy portfolio.

Meet our esteemed panelists who will be discussing election trust: Ambassador Peter F. Romero is currently Co-Host/Producer of the podcast “American Diplomat”. This unique podcast features the personal narratives of our nation’s career Foreign Service Officers, has reached 650K downloads, and a solid five-star rating with an 86.2% loyalty (repeat listens) rate. He will be our moderator for this panel. Mai El-Sadany is a human rights lawyer with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Throughout her career, she has worked to expand creative pathways to accountability, to leverage international and regional mechanisms to advance human rights, and to publish accessible analysis and scholarship on legal, judicial, and constitutional issues. Dr. Annika Silva-Leander oversees the organization’s outreach in the region, engagement with the US government and UN, and coordination of the Global Democracy Coalition. She serves as International IDEA’s Permanent Observer to the UN, advocating for democracy at the UN General Assembly. Rana Ayyub is an Indian investigative journalist and a global opinions writer at the Washington Post. She has worked as a reporter, Editor and columnist with some of the leading publications in India and internationally. Her pieces appear in the Time, New York Times, Guardian, Atlantic and Foreign Policy and she has been profiled for the cover of the New Yorker. Dean Rosa Celorio is the Burnett Family Associate Dean and Distinguished Professorial Lecturer for International and Comparative Legal Studies. In this capacity, she directs the International and Comparative Law program at GW Law, and teaches the courses International Law, International Law of Human Rights, and International Human Rights of Women.

Meet our esteemed panelists who will be discussing election access: Leila Fadel is a host of Morning Edition, as well as NPR's morning news podcast Up First. She has won numerous prestigious awards for her national and international reporting, and she will be our moderator for this first panel. Dr. Irena Hadziabdic has been working in the field of election management for the past 28 years, with the OSCE, IFES BiH, etc.?She is currently serving as the President of the BIH CEC, a position she had already served twice (2010-2011 and 2017-2018). Gerardo de Icaza has been Director of the Department of Electoral Cooperation and Observation since March 1, 2014. In his years as Director, he has led more than 100 Electoral Observation Missions in 27 countries. His well known publications include "International Law of Democracy" coordinated with Luis Almagro and “The Narrative of Fraud in Elections.” Mamabolo, Sy is an established executive with extensive electoral experience of over 25 years. He is currently the Chief Electoral Officer in South Africa, a position he has held for over seven years.?He has been involved with eleven general elections of which three he oversaw as the ultimate accounting officer as CEO. Dr. Darcie Draudt-Véjares, PhD is a Fellow for Korean Studies in the Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC. A political scientist and policy analyst, she publishes regular commentary on Northeast Asian relations and US foreign policy.
