?? Repointing Clayton, Brick by Brick! ?? Hard work continues at Clayton, the historic home of Henry Clay Frick, as part of our multi-year preservation project. Removing the building's many layers of paint (scroll back on our feed for an explainer on that process) exposed the original red brick walls of the house. Material analysis shows that the original bricks are high-quality and durable, a good sign for the building's structure. That said, uncovering the brick surface did reveal deteriorated mortar and, in a handful of places, damaged bricks. Those areas need to be addressed before recoating the house. To do that, any affected bricks are cut out from the wall and replaced with new ones of a similar color and strength. The external joints between bricks are then "repointed" — the process of cutting out the damaged mortar and replacing it with new material. A new durable, breathable lime-based mortar, which also visually matches the original mixture, completes the structure of the exterior walls. Once the repairs are finished, the project will move onto an exciting next step: recoating Clayton. Choosing the color was a more complicated process than you might think… but more on that later!

We are saddened to learn of Isabelle de Borchgrave's passing last month. The Frick Pittsburgh had the honor of presenting de Borchgrave's captivating paper sculptures on multiple occasions. A retrospective of her work — "Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper" — stunned audiences in late 2018. Last year, in conjunction with "The Red Dress" exhibition, we were thrilled to once more display a commission that now lives in the Frick's collection: a paper recreation of the dress found in Peter Paul Rubens' "Portrait of Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency, Princess of Condé." “This is the perfect time to talk about Clayton because they have a brand-new tour. It is winning awards because it is not glossing over history… The new tour really gives you all sides of history and poses questions to you that makes you think about these topics. They are not shying away from this history, from this past. They are really digging into it and making people more aware so they can have thoughtful conversations around Frick, labor, and his complicated legacy.” Hear more about our award-winning tour of Clayton, "Gilded, Not Golden," from City Cast Pittsburgh and our friends at Houses of Pittsburgh!
