Sadly I have heard many similar stories. I will rarely recommend doing this for a publication, but I would seriously avoid Valnet if you can.
If you're a freelance writer, my best piece of advice is to stay away from Valnet. They never paid me for my work after laying me off. I'll also be the first one to admit that I didn’t do my research before accepting the job. Believe me, this was a painful life lesson, and I'm being vulnerable by sharing it with the world. ALWAYS do a search on a company or client before accepting the job. I would take them to court, but I'm an unemployed disabled veteran on a fixed income. I'm not saying all that to get sympathy, and I don't want it. The only purpose of mentioning that was to illustrate my financial situation. I can't afford a lawyer, and even if I could, I'd spend more money fighting this juggernaut in court then what I'd get back. All I can do is name, shame and warn others so they won't make the same mistake I did. ***UPDATE*** I was finally paid, but was shorted about 30% of what I was supposed to get according to the contract. At this point, I'm going to walk away with what I got. I'm done with this, so please refrain from torches, pitchforks and giving advice.

Hello! WIRED is hiring. We're looking for a staff writer on our business desk with a demonstrated ability to get scoops and facility with investigative work. And we're looking for a senior editor on our culture desk to dive deep into internet rabbit holes. We're less interested in earnings reports and influencer economics than we are in the people causing and affected by the rapid, hugely consequential shifts happening right now on the internet and in society at large. Please share far and wide! And feel free to reach out with any questions, referrals, non sequiturs, etc. https://lnkd.in/eD8EbvWX https://lnkd.in/eiSxRXnm
