Increasing numbers of women are migrating from Ethiopia to the Middle East to be domestic workers, pushed by the effects of climate change, conflict and lack of employment opportunities. Both in transit and on arrival, they are at high risk of abuse, exploitation, and modern slavery. Those who return to Ethiopia often need mental health and other comprehensive reintegration support. Modern slavery is not the consequence of a handful of bad actors. Rather, it’s due to deeply entrenched social, economic and political systems. An estimated 22 million people were living in forced marriage on any given day in 2021. Forced marriage is frequently exacerbated by conflict, abject poverty and humanitarian disaster, when desperation leads families to use early or forced marriage as a survival mechanism. We asked over 250 people — grantee partners, lived-experience experts, staff, board members, donors and peer organisations — where the Freedom Fund should go next. Responding to their feedback, we are making even bolder commitments. Commercial sexual exploitation of children in Brazil is a huge and invisible problem. The majority of those who are exploited are Afro-Brazilian girls from poor and marginalised communities. Many may provide sexual services to afford food, drugs or small amounts of money. The issue is rooted in traditional gender norms, domestic and gender-based violence and high socioeconomic inequality and facilitated by impunity for traffickers, normalisation and weak child protection networks.
