关于我们

The Fire Protection Consortium, Inc. (FPI) is headquartered near Chicago, Illinois and has offices in Olympia, Washington and Nashville, Tennessee and Jacksonville, Florida. FPI, through its international representation and professional contacts, provides government, businesses and individuals with information, analysis, training, consultation and documentation to mitigate potential fire and security risks. FPI is comprised of multi-disciplinary professionals who develop proactive and comprehensive solutions designed to reduce risks that organizations are likely to face such as: fire, smoke; and attacks on physical, intellectual, financial and human assets; and terrorism and workplace violence. The Fire Protection International Consortium, Inc. (FPI) was founded in 2001 as a full service professional security and fire protection consulting and engineering firm. The two founding principals of the FPI worked for other fire protection consulting firms and felt that they had reached a level with their previous firms where they were acting as figureheads. Having a desire to be more directly involved in each project and to support our clients with a higher level of experience, The FPI was born. At the FPI we believe that our most senior engineers should work more directly with our clients. This involvement of the principals remains in effect to this day and is unique in the field.

We are excited to be on the front line of protecting these kinds of facilities, and welcome new guidance from FM Global while information is not available in either the I-Codes or NFPA standards.

Several posts ago, I wrote about revisions to FM Data Sheet 8-34, Protection for Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems and noted that they had referenced 7-112 Lithium Ion Battery Manufacturing and Storage but the document was not available. I confirmed this with FM and waited for the document be be issued. Data Sheet 7-112 has now been issued (it has an October 2024 issue date) and is available to the public. This addresses lithium ion battery manufacturing and storage, filling a critical need for those of us working on battery manufacturing facilities. As is true with all FM Data Sheets, the document can be downloaded free for all who need it. The link below is the english version but there are other languages available. https://lnkd.in/gJzSWbXx

The FPI Consortium, Inc. is pleased to announce that Christopher Carras of our New Jersey office has received his California Fire Protection Professional Engineering designation. He continues to grow with us and has recently worked on several ASRS systems (again, as we have stated, there is no criteria in NFPA 13) and on lithium ion battery manufacturing facilities. He has shown an original approach to dealing with the underlying basics of fire protection when confronted with "out of standard" fire protection. He has been quoted as saying "It's the challenges that makes this job interesting. Anybody can read the code but it is when there is no code, that we earn our fee." Congratulations Chris!

I try to watch FM Data Sheets to stay current on changes to the documents and it appears that I missed the fact that 8-34, Protection for Automatic Storage and Retreival Systems was revised in July of 2024. What is interesting is that they say within the document that the changes are to "instruct the end user to see ...Data Sheet 7-29, Ignitable Liquid Storage in Portable Containers when ignitable liquids are stored with an ASRS...see 7-31...when aerosols are being stored with an ASRS...or 7-112...when Lithium-Ion Batteries are being stored within an ASRS." I can locate 7-29 and 7-31 but cannot locate 7-112. These are all critical adds for ASRS systems however I could not locate 7-112 today on the FM web page. I will say it again--NFPA 13 HAS NO CRITERIA FOR ASRS SO IF YOU ARE WORKING ON ONE (LIKE WE DO), YOU BETTER BE FOLLOWING FM. Christopher Carras

The road trip continues. This Friday, September 6, 2024, I will be presenting to the Iron Mountain Project Managers on fire protection issues impacting their projects. This is a customized presentation for one of our long standing clients. If you are interested in a presentation on storage, fire protecction, commodities, high-piled storage or some other subject that you are dealing with as a racking company or an owner reach out to me and let's talk. FPI is asking? me to do more of these (getting me out of the office) so let's talk and set something up.

It has been a long time since I presented a full day seminar. I am excited to announce that I will be presenting NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems (NFPA 25) with Chris Carras of The FPI Consortium, Inc. at Fermi National Labs this Monday August 5, 2024. It is a full day program that we offer to interested parties at a minimal cost. LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

The 7th edition of UL268 has become the new listing standard for smoke detectors and has significantly changed the listing requirements for air aspirating detectors (i.e. VESDA and others). The attached blog is critical for those of us in the field so that we understand the impact. This change will impact new systems and existing systems when a detector is needed to be changed out. We are sending this out to our clients but believe that LinkedIn presents an opportunity to get this out to a wider base. Please review the attached and repost, if appropriate. Call us if you need any help.

A recent SFPE article highlighted the remarkable progress in non-combustible bins within Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS), providing significant advancements in fire safety. This innovation will reduce hazards and reduce sprinkler system design requirements, marking a substantial leap forward. However, it's crucial to note, as emphasized in the article, that it doesn't remove the necessity for pre-incident planning. Addressing fires in top-loading ASRS poses unique challenges for fire departments. Conventional firefighting methods often prove ineffective in such scenarios. Therefore, fire departments tasked with responding to incidents involving warehouses equipped with top-loading ASRS must undergo specialized training. This training is essential for efficiently disassembling the system to access and extinguish fires effectively. Contact FPI Consortium to ensure that your ASRS systems are protected in accordance with the latest FM Global Requirement, that your pre-incident planning meets FM Standards, and that you have experienced Fire Protection Engineers working with the local Fire Marshal. https://lnkd.in/eJTt4vpX
