Six months ago today I took my last trip to UC Davis as an employee of university development, working with amazing staff and donors helping to serve students and support research at the university. I was there for 10 years and am so grateful for those that took a chance on me with no frontline fundraising experience. I'll always treasure the relationships that came from so many great people there. So what took me out of an industry I had spent cultivating for almost 15 years across three different states, including a masters degree? The opportunity to go all-in with my wife Karen on the business she's built over 12+ years, thefoodcharlatan.com. Karen started blogging recipes when our oldest, Charlotte, was a newborn. With a point-and-shoot camera, a humanities degree, and a few family recipes she started posting her culinary adventures and telling stories in her uniquely hilarious and self-deprecating fashion. Then she put in the work. What looked like a hobby to many, grew and grew into a successful business. Since then she's brought on family and friends, writers, SEO's, and other experts. Then she got desperate enough even to turn to me, at the bottom of the barrel ??. So, If you have any tips on working with your spouse, hiring contractors, or running a small business while managing an ever-increasingly destructive 3-year old running around your house, please reach out! Check out the link for Karen's 12-year blogiversary post, which includes a bit more of our story and a recipe for a delicious (if not the most photogenic) cake.
