Friday Fun Fact: Those Wide-Eyed Newborn Moments Clients ask me all the time about awake newborn photos, and it's actually more rare than you think when they're staring straight at you. Why? Here’s the thing: newborns don’t see the world the way we do. At birth, their vision is super limited—about 8–12 inches—and they’re drawn to high-contrast shapes and shadows. So they really can't "see" me at all when I'm trying to take their picture from afar. This is why eye contact during an awake moment is such a bonus in newborn photography. They’re soaking in what they can see, and it makes those shots feel so much more personal. Parents love those glimpses of personality—it’s like their little one is already saying, “Hey, I’m here!” And when we have a more awake baby during their newborn photoshoot, I spend a little more time trying to get that direct look as a bonus! Pro tip: Keep things simple so the focus is on them and that beautiful gaze into the camera! So, next time you catch those bright little eyes on you, don’t hesitate—snap away. It’s a moment worth capturing! "What if my child is shy?" Imagine... as a baby, you've been around just your immediate family for the last year, and then all of a sudden you're brought to a strange, new place with lots of blinking lights, to meet a stranger, and then you're supposed to get messy too? All while possibly teething, nap/wake time changing, food development being different, etc. Don't worry! Some babies are a little unsure about things or just REALLY love their parents - I get it. Leading up to the photoshoot I encourage a wide variety of tips to prepare for your photoshoot with your baby including: - Encouraging social interaction outside the home - Practicing with a small cupcake - Using messy play activities to get them used to the feeling of frosting on their hands/feet Some of what we do during the photoshoot may need to be adjusted based on your child, but together, we'll come up with ways to have a gallery of beautiful photos! This sweetheart was ALL smiles while in her parents' lap, but wasn't used to being by herself! With lots of patience and care, we still had a lot of adorable moments for her first birthday cake smash! Which one is your favorite?
