We are calling on the community to donate some much needed items for folks returning home from incarceration. Especially for our clients who are unhoused, access to basic hygiene products help formerly incarcerated people feel more comfortable and seen. We are in most need of toothpaste, razors, soap, shaving cream, deodorant, and combs. If you are able, please use our Amazon wishlist in the link in our bio or feel free to stop by the office to drop a donation in person! We thank you for your support helping formerly incarcerated people feel taken care of!

Our mission is to stop the cycle of incarceration by fostering independence and self-sustainability.
关于我们
We envision a world where prior incarceration is not a barrier to secure housing, employment, and community acceptance. Our mission is to stop the cycle of incarceration by fostering independence and self-sustainability through education, stable and secure housing & employment, health care, education, and community engagement. Through the leadership and wisdom of formerly incarcerated people themselves, the First 72+ transforms the re-entry experience into one that builds on the strengths and abilities of people returning home from prison and ensures that they, their families, and their communities are given the greatest opportunity to grow and thrive. We provide holistic support services including transitional housing, case management, our Public Benefits Clinic, peer support, and low-interest loans.

Amendment 3 is a dangerous power grab that would create new opportunities for politicians to “disappear” problems by throwing our kids away in adult prisons instead of investing in real solutions. This amendment removes constitutional protections that keep most kids out of the adult criminal legal system, exposing them to harm and abuse. We need policies that help kids get back on track, not ones that throw them away. ?? On March 29, vote NO on Amendment 3. But don’t stop there. This is just one of FOUR deceptive constitutional amendments politicians are trying to sneak through. They’re hoping we won’t notice, but we see the truth. Let’s say NO to them ALL, y’all! ?? Spread the word and learn more @notothem_all Early Voting: March 15-22? |? Election Day: March 29 #NoOn3 #ProtectLAKids

Every month, our Re-entry Coach and Social Worker Troy Delone partners with Judge Marcus DeLarge in re-entry court for Docket Day. This re-entry court partnership encourages and holds folks accountable to meet their goals. Yesterday, we celebrated the progress of several clients making big steps towards meeting their goals including Mr. Carter, Mr. McGee, Mr. Chris, and Mr. Meyers. Mr. Carter has made big strides since his release in July of last year; obtaining a driver’s license, housing, and 2 jobs, all while always showing up for meetings on time! Mr. Meyers is expected to begin working soon and has an upcoming appointment to get his driver’s license. After Docket Day, we headed over to The First 72+ to attend our Financial Literacy Class; Rebuilding Credit After a Conviction. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with Judge DeLarge and all who support The First 72+!

Join us at our next Financial Literacy Lunch on Thursday, March 20th from 1pm-2pm at the Ben Smith Welcome Home Center! A conviction can significantly impact a person’s financial standing, making it difficult to secure housing, employment, and loans. However, credit recovery is possible, and this session will provide attendees with actionable steps to rebuild their financial foundation. The Financial Literacy Power Hour: Rebuilding Credit After a Conviction is an engaging and informative lunch-hour session designed to equip justice-impacted individuals with practical strategies to restore and build credit, access financial resources, and create a pathway toward financial independence. Email our Director of Economic Empowerment Patrick Young at [email protected] or call our office at (504) 324-8859 to reserve your spot!

February client highlight! Mr. Carl joined us a month ago as a transitional housing client and is our first client to complete our Life Skills Class. Since joining The First 72+, Carl has received SNAP and Medicaid benefits,? and was accepted to a job at the airport today fresh out of Life Skills! In Life Skills, Carl began to process his past relationships with friends and family, and he was first to budget a grocery list. For the first time, Carl is focusing on himself; “There was a lot of dysfunctional stuff going on in my family, even at 60 years old I got a lot of life to live and I gotta start living it for myself…Right now, I’m doing myself the best favor by just being me and trying to get myself straight.” We are so excited to share Carl’s progress! #ClientHighlight

Ronday Dixon was introduced to the First 72+ by his friend, a current service client of ours. Ronday came to us in August as a service client and secured housing with us in November; “since August, I ain’t had a sad day yet”. Ronday is currently working at Thrive and hopes to open his own seafood catering business when he has more economic stability. When asked what his experience was like at The First 72+, Ronday reflected? “Y’all got a beautiful staff, I respect y’all so much it brings tears to my eyes sometimes cause I didn’t think I could get this far”. Thanks to generous community donations, Ronday was able to comfortably furnish his new apartment with a bed, dining room table, and couch. Long term, Ronday is looking forward to giving back; “You can’t do this by yourself. You can make the money but you still gonna have to get somebody to share it with…until we come together as a whole we're going to see better days”. We are so proud of Ronday’s progress!
