CFO TIP: Do you have email alerts popping up on your screen all day? #NOT CFO BEHAVIOUR Great CFOs and leaders don’t have email alerts on. And as always, they didn’t wait until they were CFOs before they turned them off and got on with some real work instead. So here’s 3 email tips to transform your career: 1. Separate your to do list from your emails. Each morning write down the 3 things you want to achieve that day. Do them before checking you emails. 2. Check your emails max 2-3 times a day, and only after you have achieved your goals for that day. Every time you check your email you reduce your efficiency and effectiveness. CFOs and leaders know this. 3. Ignore the first email request you get. 50%+ go away because they weren’t really important. The rest, people call you or come to see you, and you can deal with the question or request live. After a while people stop emailing you with cr@p. And they only call or come to see you for stuff that’s really important. You’ve now got your life back. BONUS: never use reply to all. CFOs don’t reply to all. We get very excited in finance about Excel formulas. And that's fine, just remember...???? ? NO-ONE ELSE CARES. They only care about how your analysis helps them solve their problems and reach their goals. So many finance people fall into the trap of becoming Excel experts, thinking it will help them develop their careers. The problem is we mix up the capabilities CFOs need in their team with the capabilities needed to become a CFO. Sure, some Excel skills are useful, to a point. You probably need them more early in your career. But what got you here, won’t get you there. ? If you can do a v-lookup then you've probably got enough Excel skills to be a sh*t hot finance leader. ? CFO TIP: Building trust Want to become a CFO or FD ? Here’s another tip that helped me… ?? CFOs know that it’s not enough to just work with people. They’ve got to trust you. And you’ve got to trust them. Oh, chicken and egg. ? poor finance people blame ‘them’ for not trusting ‘us’ ? great finance people know it’s for ‘us’ to take the lead and go first Why? Because ultimately we need sales, marketing, and operations to trust us way more than they need us to trust them. We may like to think that in finance we are critical to commercial operations. But the reality is turn off the analytics, stop the reporting, budgeting and forecasting, and commercial things will still run just fine. So if you want to fast-track your way to a bigger role, take the lead and build trust in you by: ? show a genuine interest in people on a personal level ? find out people’s work objectives and help them achieve them ? focus only on the big stuff that will make a real difference. Pedantic accountants don’t influence anyone. ? Never say: “It’s not in the budget” If you really want to be a FD or CFO join our FD Ready development programme. Forecasting cashflow improves cashflow It may make us feel better, but contrary to popular belief: ? forecasting doesn’t improve cashflow Don’t let your forecasting become spreadsheet fantasy, chasing aspirational numbers round Excel. Because, the only thing that improves cashflow is…. ??? CASH ??? And really there are only 2 choices when it comes to cash: spend less and generate more. Here are some ideas to do both. 1?? SPEND LESS OF WHAT YOU HAVE ? slow down production to match demand ASAP. The last thing you want is to tie up precious cash in products you may not be able to sell ? stop paying anything you can. Send back leased cars. Contact your landlord for a payment pause. Don’t worry about loosing deposits already paid, this is about protecting your future cash not your past. ? delay any spend you can 2?? GENERATE MORE ? you’ll want to be ready for the upturn, so keep marketing appropriately. Cutting marketing is never a cost saving strategy ? forget about your aspirational ‘in a perfect World’ plans and ask ‘how can I modify all parts of my offer to keep going?’ ? speak to your bankers, funders, family now and get agreements in place now.
