The Field School aims to feed the hearts and minds of children through rigorous study rooted in a Christ-centered environment. We exist to create opportunities for children of all backgrounds to be known and loved as they learn. We believe that all children are made in the image of God, capable of becoming agents of renewal for the sake of our city and beyond. As we bring together children from diverse racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, our classical education curriculum invites students to embrace God’s goodness and timeless truths as they grow together from Pre-K through 8th grade.

The Field School: Renovation of the former CPS Francis Scott Key Elementary School (Part 1 of 2) The former Chicago Public School Francis Scott Key Elementary, located in the Austin Town Hall Park Historic District, was one of the fifty CPS schools closed in 2013. Meanwhile, the Field School – a diverse, classical school operating out of Calvary Memorial Church in nearby Oak Park – was quickly growing out of its leased space. To better serve their racially and socioeconomically diverse Pre-K through 8th student body, The Field School purchased the vacant CPS property in 2018. SMNG A has been working with them to bring new life to the unused buildings and site, alongside other revitalization efforts in this historically disinvested West Side community. The Phase 1 renovation of the smaller annex building was completed in the summer of 2022 and welcomed its first students for the 2022-2023 school year. Through the use of thoughtful interior finishes, the introduction of additional natural light in corridors, and the prominent display of artwork in public spaces, the new design creates a juxtaposition with the original exposed concrete and metal panel walls, thereby humanizing the industrial feel of the prefabricated 1970s vintage building. The barren parking lot was similarly transformed with a new nature-based play area and native plantings. This transformation is evident in the before and after photos – take a look!
