“Artists call us to the public square, right? They actually move us from being very individually focused to collectively focused … they’re often the people who help us understand what’s going on emotionally and intellectually.” – Field Foundation President Daniel O. Ash In the latest episode of the Gathering Ground podcast, Daniel joins host Mary Morten and visionary leaders Michelle T. Boone, Gabrielle Lyon, and Jane M. Saks for a discussion about the intersection of art, culture and social justice. Daniel describes the Field Foundation’s commitment to funding the arts as key to its strategy to support community power building—where investments in artists and the creative sector, leaders and civic infrastructure, local news, and organizers collectively serve resident-driven agendas and advance transformational change. Tune in for an insightful conversation about the role of arts and humanities in fostering community, creating public spaces for dialogue, and sparking social change: https://bit.ly/4gpgeye #Arts #Culture #SocialJustice #Philanthropy #GatheringGround #SocialImpact #ArtsAndCulture #Leadership #Philanthropy #Community #Chicago

Field’s Arts Program Officer Richard Tran recently attended the PNAP Gala at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen to support?Prison + Neighborhood Arts/Education Project (PNAP). Great to see Field grantee partners South Side Weekly, Invisible Institute, Cicero Independiente, and Chicago News Weekly in the spotlight at the recent Press Forward summit. #journalism #storytelling #community #philanthropy #pressforward #chicago
At our recent funder’s summit, we loved hearing from newsrooms funded by Press Forward Chicago - including the South Side Weekly and the Invisible Institute. Both are housed in the same co-working space and collaborate on stories, but their histories and approaches to informing Chicago residents differ. The South Side Weekly began as a student newspaper at the University of Chicago, and holds true to those roots. It still sees itself as a training ground for emerging journalists as it publishes a free print edition focused on “active, participatory, community based journalism,” Executive Director Malik Jackson said. The Invisible Institute, meanwhile, began as a network of people fighting for the rights of public housing residents in the 1990s. Today, the Institute combines data-based investigations with residents lived experiences to create impactful investigations on hate crimes, human trafficking, police violence and more. Their work led to two Pulitzer Prizes last year. Thank you to all the Chicago journalists who shared their insights with Press Forward funders, including Windy City Media Network, LLC, Cicero Independiente, Growing Community Media NFP (parent company of Austin Weekly News) and Chicago News Weekly. And to our Chicago funders for helping us organize the events: The Chicago Community Trust, MacArthur Foundation and The Joyce Foundation. Adding our congratulations to Field grantee partners Borderless Magazine and Block Club Chicago, who were recognized with 2024 LION: Local Independent Online News Publishers Sustainability Awards last week. Both participated in the "Segregation & Migrant Crisis Reporting Project" earlier this year, which enlisted local media outlets to produce impactful news coverage while maintaining editorial independence. Managed by Public Narrative, the work was made possible by a #HealingIllinois grant to support racial healing work statewide. We appreciate Borderless, Block Club and Public Narrative for their contributions to #journalism and the local media ecosystem in #Chicago. Congrats as well to all awardees! #localnews #community #philanthropy
