There's not much more to add to the conversation about Jaguar Land Rover UK's bold rebrand announcement. Is it a misstep? Or is the British luxury automaker light years ahead of the rest of us? One clue may lie in its confidence in the EV market, despite the sector's lagging sales. While Jaguar is pushing full steam ahead, fellow British luxury carmaker Bentley Motors has dialed back its transition timeline, focusing on PHEVs instead of going fully electric. What does that mean for the rest of category? https://lnkd.in/g4gJNyhT #electricvehicles #branding #phevs #evs

Researchers from Scotland’s Heriot-Watt University say a new innovation could reshape how the fashion industry addresses its role in the microplastic crisis. Textile researchers at the university have developed the world’s first visual fiber fragmentation scale, a cost-effective tool designed to measure and reduce the environmental impact of fiber shedding from clothing. Dr. Lisa Macintyre, associate professor at the university’s School of Textiles and Design, leads the four-year project aimed at equipping both manufacturers and consumers with better information about textile pollution. She describes the scale as a transformative solution for one of fashion’s most pervasive environmental challenges. “The microplastics problem is massive. Fashion and textiles is one of the biggest sources of secondary microplastics in the environment with fragments of plastic fibers, like polyester and nylon, being shed from clothing,” Macintyre explained. https://lnkd.in/gaMGtKBp #textiles #microplastic #sustainablefashion

The LYCRA Company and QIRA have partnered on a bio-based fiber made from corn. This process allows Lycra to source ingredients that now make up about 70 percent of its fiber content, positioning it as the leader in sustainable spandex production. This partnership represents “an enablement for us to have an impact at scale and a meaningful impact,” says Jon Veldhouse, CEO of Qore. Lycra plans to initiate full-scale production of this bio-derived fiber by early next year. https://lnkd.in/guvvT2PV #materials #textiles #biobased #circularfashion

The Circular Fashion Innovation Network has released its?Interim Report, tracing the U.K.’s journey toward a circular fashion economy. Launched by the British Fashion Council in collaboration with the U.K. Fashion and Textile Association and backed by U.K. Research and Innovation. Over the past year, CFIN engaged stakeholders across the industry, including CHANEL, John Lewis & Partners, @WRAP, and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to develop strategies and solutions that address the environmental challenges facing the sector. Another significant development comes with the introduction of the?C2C Certified Circularity?certification, built on the Cradle to Cradle NGO (C2C NGO) Certified Version 4.1 standard. This certification provides businesses across sectors with a framework to embed circularity into product design, material sourcing, and production systems, ensuring compliance with emerging E.U. and U.S. regulations. With fur In fashion’s rearview mirror, Stella McCartney takes on feathers. After years of battling against the use of fur, a fight that she and countless others in the industry have largely won, designer Stella McCartney has turned her attention to another form of fashion cruelty — one that might be as overlooked as it is ubiquitous. Her latest runway show at Paris Fashion Week carried a clear message: feathers are as cruel as fur. “We’re talking about not killing birds this season,” the designer said at her Paris Fashion Week showing, “but a billion and a half birds are killed for fashion. Feathers belong on birds, so we can be inspired by them. This season was about being elevated, being a bird, being free and seeing things from a different perspective: masculinity, femininity.” https://lnkd.in/gHmCzAiU #pfw #fashionweek #feathers #sustainablematerials #materialinnovation #veganfashion

Outerknown has unveiled its first-ever seaweed-based garment made from Keel Labs' Kelsun fiber, blending sustainability and style into the iconic Blanket Shirt. Sustainable materials manufacturer Keel Labs has teamed up with California-based apparel brand Outerknown to launch the first commercial garment made from Kelsun, a seaweed-based fiber. This limited-edition release reimagines Outerknown’s iconic?Blanket Shirt, blending organic cotton with Kelsun, marking a pivotal moment for both brands as they push the boundaries of sustainable fashion. Kelsun is a biodegradable fiber derived from seaweed, offering a viable alternative to conventional textiles that rely heavily on water and pesticides. With the fashion industry producing an estimated 21 billion tons of textile waste annually, Keel Labs says this innovation holds significant potential to mitigate the environmental impact of traditional garment production. It sources seaweed under strict sustainability guidelines, and the fiber it yields is not only bio-based but also biodegradable in wastewater. #seaweed #biodegradable #materialinnovation #sustainablefashion https://lnkd.in/d62-P3M9

Christian Siriano made his sustainable fashion debut at New York Fashion Week with two pieces made from Circ? Lyocell, a recycled textile — a first for the designer and NYFW. “I’ve never actually used a fully sustainable fabrication, and I felt like it was really needed,” the designer said. “I think what I did with it was try to show how it can feel luxurious and feel evening-like and elegant. And it's not just for day wear. I think sometimes when people think of recycled fabric, they don't think of evening.” #textiles #materialinnovation #lyocell #nyfw https://lnkd.in/dh7X7fax

The Bill Gates and Sam Altman backed GALY has secured $33 million in a Series B funding round to expand its sustainable lab-grown cotton technology. “Unfortunately, it’s not a matter of ‘if,’ but ‘when.’ Soon, the world will face increased volatility in conventional agriculture as extreme weather conditions become more frequent. When that time comes, Galy will be ready, better equipping our economy to withstand these shocks.” - Luciano Bueno, CEO and founder of Galy https://lnkd.in/gcy2yJEU #cellularagriculture #labgrown #supplychain #cotton #sustainablefashion
