Redressing racial and economic inequity in university communities.
关于我们
The UVA Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity Through Community-Engaged Scholarship (aka The Equity Center) was founded in 2019 to imagine how the University of Virginia could serve as not just an anchor institution, but also an authentic community resource and partner in the local redress of inequity. Specifically, the Equity Center seeks to change the way University scholars interact with members of the surrounding community, replacing an imbalanced, and sometimes even exploitive model with one built upon mutual respect, mutual benefit, and shared power in all knowledge making efforts. 201 West Main Street, Charlottesville

In partnership with our Equitable Analysis team, Piedmont Virginia Community College, and Network2Work@PVCC, we’re excited to announce Orange Dot Report 6.0—an updated assessment of family self-sufficiency in the Charlottesville region. The 2011 Orange Dot Report identified the local income gap and proposed strategies to help families achieve self-sufficiency. It also led to the creation of the Network2Work framework at Piedmont Virginia Community College, connecting job-seekers, employers, and resources through neighborhood-based volunteers. Our team had a blast participating in the Downtown Halloween Festival on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall for the first time since moving into our new office last October! ?? We loved seeing all the creative costumes and handing out candy to the many trick-or-treaters who stopped by our table. Thank you to everyone who made the festival so much fun—we can’t wait to join again next year! #Charlottesville #HalloweenFestival #albemarlecounty #communitypartnerships #youthpower

Our community research team traveled to the Eastern Shore to support the Eastern Shore of Virginia Climate Equity Project and the Catch the King initiative! ?? Students measured the height of King Tides and created sounds with bucket drums to reflect the size of these tides. The data they gathered will help scholars improve models of water and flooding. Congratulations to our Executive Director, Ben Allen, Ed.D, who has been named a 2024-25 United States Obama Leader with the Obama Foundation!
I’m excited to share that I’ve been selected as a United States Obama Leader in the 2024-25 Obama Foundation Leaders Program cohort. This opportunity is about more than just leadership development—it’s about learning how to engage with diverse perspectives and create meaningful change that lasts. I’m proud to be one of 100 United States Obama Leaders in this cohort. ? As someone who grew up in Charlottesville and graduated from the University of Virginia four times over, my work has always centered on building genuine partnerships in the community I call home. I’ve taught in Washington, D.C., and Charlottesville, served as an associate principal in Albemarle County and continued my research in culturally responsive leadership. Beyond education, my role as a Captain in the Army Reserves has allowed me to serve in various capacities, from logistics to intelligence analysis. ? This next step with the Obama Foundation is deeply connected to my commitment at The Equity Center: fostering relationships that empower our communities and strengthen democracy. I’m looking forward to learning and growing and how it will shape the work I continue to do here in Charlottesville and beyond. https://lnkd.in/e-VGNam5 Thank you to Daniel Fairley II, M.Ed., B. Cameron Webb, MD, JD, and Larry Lee Rowley, Ph.D. for your encouragement to apply to this program. Thank you to President Obama, Mrs. Obama, and the Obama Foundation for this amazing opportunity! Our partners at Apex Clean Energy aim to give students a high-level understanding of the Renewable Energy Industry by giving them hands-on experience with two important facets of the industry -- Energy Assessment & Geographic Information System (GIS) during the Apex Academy summer program. Thanks, Apex Clean Energy, for inviting SHP students to participate in the weeklong workshop! During both afternoons, students had the opportunity to meet experts from our various departments as a way to give them a wider perspective on the variety of skills and educational backgrounds that are needed in the clean energy industry. #theequitycenteruva #communitypartnerships #Charlottesville #albemarlecounty #UVA #youthpower #publiceducation #cleanenergy
